Crockett calls for border czar Homan to be confirmed by the Senate

Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) called for Senate confirmation of President-elect Trump’s new border czar, Tom Homan.

“I think if they’re going to implore him with the kind of power that he thinks he has, then he absolutely should be confirmed by the Senate,” Crockett said on CNN Tuesday.

Homan previously served as acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Shortly after Trump won the election earlier this month, Homan was tapped for the new position of “border czar.”

Trump promised for months to launch the country’s largest deportation operation. Homan said he would keep that promise and has clashed with Denver Mayor Mike Johnston on the issue, saying he would send the mayor to prison if he refused to participate in deportations.

In 2019, Trump sent a nomination for Homan to be the official head of ICE to the Senate, but Homan withdrew his nomination rather than face a Senate confirmation process. Now, in his newest position, he won’t have to face the confirmation process that Trump’s entire Cabinet will endure.

The position of border czar is not an official government title, but Homan is expected to act as an adviser overseeing daily operations and border security and enforcement strategy.

Crockett argued Tuesday that someone like Homan, with the power given to him in the new position, should go through the same process as Trump’s other nominees.

“Ultimately, he should have to undergo the same scrutiny if he wants to gain this kind of power,” she said.

In this new role, Homan will work under and alongside Trump’s Department of Homeland Security pick, South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (right).

Homan’s role in the administration has worried immigration advocates, particularly given his plans to conduct workplace raids, possible family separations and deportations of the immediate families of U.S. citizens.
