Current information on schools and road conditions

Much to the delight of some and the dismay of others, Nashville and Middle Tennessee will likely be blanketed with several inches of snow, shutting down roads and schools.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory Thursday through 6 a.m. Saturday.

Meteorologists estimate that between 15 and 20 cm of snow will fall across the region, causing slippery road conditions during morning and evening commutes.

When does it start snowing in Nashville?

Snow is expected to fall between 4 and 7 a.m. in Nashville

The heaviest snowfall is expected to begin around 10 a.m. for most of the Middle Tennessee region, said Ryan Husted, warning coordination meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Nashville.

“At this point we expect major travel issues with slippery and snowy roads and any winter mix we get toward the Tennessee border,” Husted said. “In any case, getting home on Friday will not be an easy task…The evening rush hour (Friday) will be a nightmare given the snow-covered roads.”

Most areas should be dry until midnight, but difficult travel conditions will continue into Saturday.

If you haven’t finished your shopping trip yet, you’ll probably only find empty shelves at this point.

“If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency,” the National Weather Service said.

Governor Bill Lee declares a state of emergency

Gov. Bill Lee declared a state of emergency for Tennessee on Thursday as 6 to 8 inches of snow is expected to fall across much of the state on Friday. Due to the state of emergency, all government offices will be closed on Friday.

Snow Day: School Closings in Middle Tennessee

Many schools in Middle Tennessee have already declared a snow day.

Metro Nashville Public Schools: Closed, all extracurricular activities, sports practices, games, performances and meetings canceled.
Clarksville-Montgomery County Schools: Closed, all after school activities, athletics and training canceled.
Dickson County Schools: Closed
Williamson County Schools: Closed, there is no care for school-age children.
Sumner County Schools: Closed
Cheatham County Schools: Closed
Wilson County Schools: Closed
Rutherford County Schools: Closed
Robertson County Schools: Closed

Nashville road conditions

If you can stay indoors on Friday, the weather service recommends doing so as road conditions are likely to deteriorate very quickly.

In the following days, the temperatures will be just warm enough for the remaining snow to melt and freeze again during the night, leading to the formation of black ice.
