Cyclones win in Iowa for first time since 2014

IOWA CITY – The Cy-Hawk men’s basketball rivalry has seen one-sided games in recent years. Thursday’s edition was the closest in seven years and provided an exciting and satisfying victory for the Iowa State players as they defeated Iowa 89-80.

This was Iowa State’s first win at Carver-Hawkeye Arena since 2014. It was the first time the Cyclones won two straight games against the Hawkeyes since they won three straight meetings from 2013 to 2015.

No. 3 Iowa State trailed most of the game. The Cyclones tied the score midway through the second half after a 13-4 run, capped by a second-chance basket by Nate Heise, to make it 66-66 with 7:44 left.

Iowa Hawkeyes guard Brock Harding (2) drives to the basket as Iowa State Cyclones center Dishon Jackson (1) defends on Thursday, December 12, 2024, at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa.

The Cyclones first took the lead when Heise made a layup, and then Curtis Jones followed with an acrobatic circus shot that gave the Cyclones a 78-74 lead with 2:08 left.

Iowa State struggled defensively down the stretch. Aside from two baskets in the final seconds, the Hawkeyes went six minutes without a field goal.
