After Clemson’s season came to a disappointing end with a 38-24 loss to Texas in the first round of the College Football Playoff, questions naturally arose about potential personnel changes. The Tigers’ defensive issues throughout the season were once again on full display as Texas totaled 494 yards, including 292 on the ground.

At the postgame press conference, Dabo Swinney was asked if there could be any adjustments made to his coaching staff and dismissed the idea. “Oh man, we’re not worried about it,” Swinney said. “We had a great year, we won the championship. We have to improve in all areas. We have an excellent staff. All these guys work really hard and work well together.”

Swinney emphasized that the program’s focus will be on holistic improvement rather than reactionary changes. “We were good enough to get into the playoffs, good enough to win the league. Not good enough to win everything. So we have to get better in all areas,” he added.

Defensive issues have been a recurring theme for Clemson this season. The Tigers allowed an average of 6.9 yards per game against the Longhorns, struggled to stop the run and, entering the game, were outside the top 40 in key defensive metrics, including total and point defense. While Swinney stands by his staff for now, the offseason will be critical in addressing the areas that have held Clemson back from competing at the highest level.
