Dak Prescott updates on recovery from thigh surgery

Exactly one month after tearing his hamstring, Dak Prescott reached a milestone in his recovery.

“This is actually my first day of driving, so I’m just living it up in the truck,” the Dallas Cowboys quarterback told Yahoo Sports on Tuesday. “Wearing braces but being able to drive again after a few weeks is a huge win. Even though I still have my crutches, being able to walk normally with my crutches (and putting more weight on my leg) is a big win.”

Prescott’s hamstring tendon partially tore from the bone in the Cowboys’ Nov. 3 game against the Atlanta Falcons. Prescott missed the remainder of the game and then underwent surgery to repair his tendon on November 13.

His early recovery required initial healing of the thigh muscles and bone attachments. But Prescott has begun redeveloping the area.

“I started with some weight shifts and different core exercises,” said Prescott in collaboration with DICK’S Sporting Goods. “When I can take off my crutches to train next, I’m looking forward to that.”

The upcoming offseason gives Prescott the opportunity to pursue recovery metrics without a “set schedule,” he said.

According to NFL Next Gen Stats, the Cowboys have five regular season games left and only have a 4 percent chance of making the playoffs. The Cowboys took a 3-5 lead against Prescott and have gone 2-2 since.

Prescott expects his recovery window to be complete before the start of 2025 offseason activities.

“I don’t necessarily need to rush back,” he said. “However, I see myself entering this offseason (without) any limitations. It’s not even talked about. My plan is to be at full speed until that happens, not even in rehab mode, working on becoming a better quarterback for this team.”

Prescott watched the Cowboys’ Thanksgiving game from the dugout to avoid the risk of a collision that he couldn’t avoid because he wasn’t mobile enough, a concern that almost came up when he was at the game on Nov. 10 of Dallas was on the sideline against the Philadelphia Eagles.

He’s still in communication with Cooper Rush and the quarterbacks to help out whenever they want, and drops in on meetings to “keep the mood and spirit as positive as possible.”

Prescott’s review film where he reflects on when to let a receiver make another play and when to buy time in the pocket as routes develop. He wants to prepare mentally for next season while he can’t prepare physically yet.

“I take a lot of notes,” Prescott said. “I’m fucking missing the game right now. (But) the rehab has started. I’m already starting to achieve small goals and victories from one day to the next.

“Looks so exciting.”
