Dallas Cowboys Stock Report: Jourdan Lewis and DaRon Bland are the frontrunners

As the Dallas Cowboys game came to a close on Sunday night, NBC’s Cris Collinsworth had a very special comment. The former wide receiver noted that what he saw in Dallas may have been the best games a secondary has ever played. His words, not mine.

It was a remarkable performance from the group, and the fact that Trevon Diggs wasn’t there makes it harder to believe. Big credit goes to Al Harris as always, but also to Mike Zimmer for getting this group ready to play.

Even though the runner-up stole the show, the reality of Sunday night’s win is that a number of people were instrumental. This is our post-win stock report and it’s full of green arrows because we just saw one of the Cowboys’ better games overall this season.

Let’s get started.

Stock up: Jourdan Lewis

We’ve been praising Jourdan Lewis all season, and on Sunday night he proved exactly why. Players like Jourdan feel like unique cowboys who find a way to scratch, scrape, fight, whatever you want to call it, and make an impression over the course of a tenure that we can’t believe will last do as long as it was like that. He’s in his eighth year and doing his best in a game where the Cowboys were just eliminated from the playoffs.

I mean that in the most flattering way possible, because Lewis always reminded me of Orlando Scandrick in that sense. He will not disappear, neither from the team in general nor from the player he protects. He was the “other” cornerback taken in his draft class. He is one of one. What a player.

Stock up: DaRon Bland

The Cowboys have played without DaRon Bland for most of this season, and while we haven’t seen a pick-six from him yet, we may have had one of the most incredible turnovers of all time for which he was responsible.

Just when it seemed like everything was falling apart for Dallas, Bland clinched the game.

At that moment, only DaRon Bland wanted it more than Rachaad White. That’s basically what we love about football, isn’t it? We love that a player can make a decision and act on it, implementing their will in a way that surpasses the other.

Stock up: Donovan Wilson

At one point in the game, Cris Collinsworth also compared Donovan Wilson to Ronnie Lott. Yes, that really happened.

Sunday night, however, was a similar game for Wilson. He has always been an enforcer for Dallas and was let loose time and time again throughout the contest. It’s a hit-or-miss type of skill (no pun intended), but on Sunday night it worked everywhere.

Stock up: CeeDee lamb

Think back to when the Cowboys were defeated by the Baltimore Ravens. It was a difficult scene overall, but the conversation surrounding CeeDee Lamb wasn’t particularly good among Cowboys fans. People questioned his body language and all those things.

Now remember how Lamb has played over the last six weeks or so. Without his quarterback, with a shoulder problem and with the team mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, he gave it his all as if everything depended on it. Oh, and this all happened to happen after the front office absurdly delayed its contract negotiations to the point where they spilled all over Oxnard.

Stock up: Jake Ferguson

It’s been a while since Ferguson had a chance to shine, but Sunday night showcased the volatile, contact-seeking player we’ve come to know throughout his career so far. Expectations for Ferguson were high at the start of the year, and while those things didn’t fully come to fruition, he has exemplified the no-give-up attitude that currently surrounds the team.

Stock up: Marist Liufau

The Cowboys may have discovered another defensive prospect. Marist Liufau is currently playing football as well as anyone else on the team.

Liufau has an aggressiveness and physicality that is simply different from everyone else. He seeks chaos and often manages it successfully. Dallas dominated Tampa so clearly in large part because of the performance he put up.

Stock up: Jalen Tolbert

Several things can be true.

It may be true that the Cowboys need to learn a few things and admit them about the state of their roster so that they don’t become dependent on players who are unlikely to make the jump to the position the team absolutely needs. At the same time, it may be true that someone like Jalen Tolbert can contribute to the team’s success in his own way. It’s nice to see he has his moments.

Stock up: Nick Vigil

One of the more meaningful moments leading up to this game for Dallas was Eric Kendrick’s name appearing on the inactive list. His absence required Nick Vigil to rise to the occasion.

He did that and more.

This is why football is so great (in addition to the DaRon Bland stuff above). The moment required Nick Vigil to be great and Nick Vigil Was Great. How awesome is THAT?!

Stock up: Chauncey Golston

The narrative has picked up the idea that Osa Odighizuwa has played really well this season and will be paid well in the off-season. But you know who else was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft Also Did you have a great year? Chauncey Golston!

Golston has been great all season and had a nice sack on Sunday night (thanks in part to Carl Lawson) which made things even sweeter.

Stock up: Mike McCarthy

It’s perfectly fine if you want the Cowboys to move on from Mike McCarthy. There is logic, reasons and data to support this case. But based on what we’ve seen from this team lately, you have to at least take your hat off to this man.

They were 3-7 after a complete loss Monday Night Football by a somewhat deceptive team in the Houston Texans and McCarthy could have happened very took it in stride and accepted that the season was indeed doomed from the start. Hell, he could have waved the white flag after the actual start that set them up so badly in the offseason.

They have won four of their last five games and are one miscalculation away from winning all five games. It’s fair to say they’ve been doing a good job lately.
