Dallas Cowboys WR CeeDee Lamb has a chance to set a receiving record in his first five years

The Dallas Cowboys have had some of the best offenses in the NFL over the last half decade. All-Pro wide receiver CeeDee Lamb made a big contribution to this. He was named to the Pro Bowl three times in his first four seasons and also earned multiple All-Pro honors. Simply put: the guy is special.

Lamb is having another great year as he enters Week 16 ranked third in receiving yards (1,089) and receiving yards (94). Speaking of receptions, with three games left in the season, Lamb has a chance to set an NFL record. He currently has 489 receptions in his first five years in the league. By the end of the season he needs 22 catches to break Michael Thomas’ all-time record (510).

This means that Lamb would have to concede an average of just over seven balls per game over the rest of the game to set the record. In 14 games, Lamb is averaging just under seven catches per game. So he’s basically hit exactly the pace he needs to hit the benchmark. Breaking down his career, it would be pretty impressive if Lamb actually re-wrote the history books in this category.

In Lamb’s rookie year, quarterback Dak Prescott missed the final 11 games with an ankle injury. However, Lamb still caught 74 balls that year and just missed the 1,000-yard mark. In 2022, Prescott missed five games due to a broken thumb. Lamb caught 49 passes during that span, including three games with double-digit passes (107 at the end of the year). Once again, Prescott will miss significant time in 2024 due to a torn hamstring. In the six games he has missed so far, Lamb has collected 41 balls with Cooper Rush at the helm, which is about the pace he needs to set the record in question.

The most important thing for the Cowboys is to finish the season strong despite missing the postseason. If Lamb can set a record doing this, that would be sweet too.
