Damage was reported in Athens after overnight storms

ATHENS, Ala. (WAFF) – Overnight storms hit the Athens area, causing widespread damage from road closures, downed power lines and debris throughout the region.

Athens Utilities has been working to resolve the power outages.

According to the Limestone County Emergency Management Agency, about 2,500 people were without power around 3 a.m. and there are currently about 750 outages in the county.

According to the Athens city administration, there is significant damage to the square in downtown Athens.

  • Heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment, as well as roofing material and other debris, including a Christmas tree, were blown into the street.
  • Large tree at the bottom of the Limestone County Courthouse
  • Old pecan tree down in Pecan Park
  • Utility lines and poles are broken at the Veterans Museum, and the museum and park have been damaged
  • The brick building with the museum mural is gone.
  • Fire Station No. 3 shows damage

Officials are urging people to avoid downed power lines and areas where crews are working.

The following areas are closed due to debris or working crews:

  • Pine and Clinton Streets
  • The square around the courthouse
  • Pryor Street by the railroad tracks
