Damage was reported in central and southern Alabama following overnight storms

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – Residents are picking up debris after a powerful line of storms moved through parts of central and southern Alabama from Saturday night into Sunday morning.

In Montgomery County, Pike Road Mayor Gordon Stone said trees were down and property damage occurred throughout the community.

Trees and power lines also fell in Macon County. County EMA Director Frank Lee says the downed lines caused some fires. He says the damage is primarily in the Notasulga, Shorter and Franklin areas.

Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed said there were reports of damage in parts of the Spring Valley neighborhood off Woodley Road. Montgomery EMA officials say most roads in the county have been cleared.

POWER OUTAGES

Alabama Power reports that over 4,000 of its customers in central Alabama are without power as of 10 a.m. Sunday:

Montgomery County: 1,700 customers

Lowndes County: 1,100 customers

Tallapoosa County: 500 customers

Lee County: 400 customers

Dallas County: 270 customers

Chilton County: 180 customers

There are also isolated outages in Perry, Butler, Wilcox and Bullock counties. An Alabama Power spokesman said damage reports included several broken poles and downed wires from downed trees and large branches.

As of 10:40 a.m., Dixie Electric Cooperative reports 1,600 customers without power.

Dixie Electric and Alabama Power crews are working to restore power as quickly as possible.

No deaths or injuries were reported in central Alabama.
