Dan Campbell provides several Lions injury updates and discusses options at CB

Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell spoke to the media Monday afternoon and gave numerous injury updates – both players who recently suffered injuries and the potential return of others.

Here’s what we know:

RB David Montgomery is done for the year

Campbell noted that Montgomery’s injury will require surgery and he will be out for the remainder of the year. Previous reports suggested it was an MCL injury that required further testing, and Campbell noted those tests confirmed the worst.

“Looks like he’s going to have to have surgery that will keep him out of action for the rest of the year,” Campbell said. “He had it done yesterday at some point in this game. David is so tough, man. He kept playing, got it looked at today and realized that was it.”

Montgomery leads the team with 12 rushing touchdowns and has been Detroit’s tone-setter all year with his physical rushing style.

“He’s just the ultimate teammate, the ultimate competitor. We will miss him,” Campbell said. “He is one of the people who put us in this position and helped us get to where we are now. We all owe it to him to keep going and make sure this wasn’t in vain.”

DT Alim McNeill is done for the year

It was previously reported that McNeill suffered a torn ACL and will be out this year. Campbell confirmed McNeill’s season is over and he will need surgery.

CB Khalil Dorsey undergoes surgery

Dorsey suffered a serious leg injury that required medical attention and immediate hospitalization. Campbell confirmed that Dorsey underwent surgery on Sunday evening.

CB Carlton Davis is out, it is unclear whether a return is possible

Campbell confirmed earlier reports that Davis has a jaw injury and will be out. When asked if there was a chance of a return to the playoffs, Campbell was noncommittal.

“I’m not sure yet,” Campbell said. “I’m not sure how long this will take. All I know is I don’t see it happening in the immediate future.”

Lions have several options at cornerback that the Lions will explore

With Davis and Dorsey out for the foreseeable future, the Lions have an open starting cornerback spot opposite Terrion Arnold. In the second half of the Bills game, it was Kindle Vildor who stepped in, but Campbell went over various options that he and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn had begun discussing, including the possible removal of Brian Branch from the safety position.

“Certainly E-man (Emmanuel Moseley) is someone we have in the squad,” Campbell said. “We already have Vildor who helped us finish this game. You still have TA (Arnold). And you’re right, (Brian) Branch, he’s someone we need to talk about. What do we do with Branch? Do we keep him where he is? Do we move him? We have Amik (Robertson). Will Amik stay inside? Is he going outside?”

Another possible way to help in secondary education is…

Ifeatu Melifonwu will begin his training watch this week

Campbell announced that Melifonwu will return to practice this week after a second stint on injured reserve. Melifonwu missed the entire season with an ankle and finger injury, so Campbell isn’t sure if Melifonwu will be available immediately. However, if he is willing to return, he could be part of the solution in the secondary.

“We need to practice a little bit to see where some of these guys are at who haven’t practiced in a while,” Campbell said.

Another cornerback option is off the table for at least another week:

Ennis Rakestraw is close, but won’t be returning from IR this week

Campbell has indicated that they won’t be starting Rakestraw’s training window this week, but it sounds like he’s close to being ready.

“I don’t think he’s ready, not yet,” Campbell said. “He’s close, but not yet.”

Rakestraw is eligible to come off injured reserve at any time after suffering a hamstring injury when he is ready. The Lions rookie has played just 46 times on defense this year. So even if he’s healthy, he’ll likely still need to get some practice in before Detroit trusts him with a starting role.

A little good news

Dave Birkett pointed out that starting left tackle Graham Glasgow was seen heading to the X-ray room after Sunday’s game. Campbell said Glasgow was fine.

“He’s in a little pain, but he got out of it okay,” Campbell said.

Glasgow didn’t miss a beat in the game.
