‘Danger!’ Fan Favorite Drew Goins Returns for a Second Chance – Did He Get Taylor Swift’s Redemption?

(Warning: The following contains MAJOR spoilers for the January 6 episode Danger!.)

After Drew Goins’ first appearance in September 2024, fans were eager to see him again Danger!and that’s exactly what happened in the second and final week of the Second Chance Tournament. In fact, he even got a little comeuppance after previously missing a question from Taylor Swift.

Goins, a journalist from Honolulu, Hawaii, competed against Steve Miller, a retired medical transcriptionist from Eugene, Oregon, and Jonquil Garrick-Reynolds, a theater wardrobe technician from Ottawa, Ontario. The three hoped to reach the finals on January 9th and then compete alongside Will Yancey in the Champions Wildcard event (starting January 13th).

Goins was in control of the game early on, leading on both breaks of the Jeopardy! round and doubles his score with the first Daily Double; In “Historical History” he correctly answered: “The Arab-Israeli War of 1973 occurred in these two periods, one Jewish and one Islamic, both of which involve fasting” (What are Ramadan and Yom Kippur?).

During his interview midway through the first round, host Ken Jennings asked about a “clash with some angry Swifties” after his first episode. “I got a Taylor Swift question wrong and went home worried the Swifties would drag me out of bed one night, but it turns out the angry Swiftie was my brother, who is here today Goins shared. “The night before the recording he had a whole practice board prepared for me,” and while the goal may have been to just get by and he still had more to learn, “it was totally Taylor Swift.” Jennings suggested, that he might get a second chance here, because “that’s what second chances are for.”

Well, Goins certainly did, with the final clue on the Jeopardy! Round in Albums Reading (and Laughing): “In 2014, Taylor Swift gave us this album named after a different year.” Goins called and excitedly replied, “What’s 1989?” Jennings replied, “Redemption for Drew. That’s right. And the crowd goes wild.”

While Goins was on his way to the double with 11,600 points ahead of Miller’s 3,400 points and Garrick-Reynolds with 2,600 points! Jeopardy, it wasn’t a runaway for him. That was due in part to Miller’s play this round, including doubling his score with the second Daily Double of the game. In “Alliteration on the Map” he correctly answered, “What is Corpus Christi?” because “Mustang and Padre Islands lie between this town in Texas and the Gulf of Mexico.” That gave him 16,400 to Goin’s then 18,800. But Goins got his third Daily Double and still led Final Jeopardy! with 33,400 to Miller’s 18,400 and Garrick-Reynolds’ 9,800.

All three players correctly answered “What is Tinder?” in “21st Century Business” for the clue: “An early version of this app was called Matchbox, but that name was too similar to another company that offered the same service.” Goins achieved the second highest winning total of the entire season with 36,801.

“I’m happy to see that Draw is finally out of the woods with this epic redemption arc. No more bad blood from the angry Swifties!” A fan wrote in the Reddit thread after the episode and Goins replied: “‘Bad Blood’! I studied! I understand that!”

Danger! Player Sam Cameron chimed in on the thread to share his thoughts from the green room of the recording. “This was truly a cracking match,” he wrote, “and it didn’t disappoint upon rewatch.” The gutsy Daily Double payouts, the too-perfect Taylor Swift cue – Steve and Jonquil played so well and stayed until Competitive towards the end, but it’s hard to stop the kind of freight train that Drew led in this game. Congratulations to all three players, what a fantastic start to the week!”

Player Zoe Grobman, who is also on the program this week, added: “Jonquil was the first contestant I met when I was waiting for the elevator at the hotel. She is an absolute sweetheart and razor-sharp, the type of person who makes you fall in love with her straight away. I remembered Steve from his original game. He was also there the day before for last week’s recordings. I didn’t know Drew before tape day, but he quickly won everyone over with his infectious energy. In other words, when they announced the contestants today, I was sad that only one of them could win.”

Grobman also shared that the games were recorded on Election Day. “There was a nervous energy in the air. “It was honestly a huge relief for us to have to turn off our phones and entertain each other instead of scrolling to doom online,” she wrote. “During the FJ, I joked in the green room that you should definitely make sure to spell Tinder correctly to avoid confusion with… um… another app. So of course we were all happy when Drew left out the E – but what an amazing fire symbol! When he returned to the green room, he immediately joked about it himself. A great game from all three players.”
