Dangerously cold weather will continue until Wednesday

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (KCTV) – Dangerously cold air moved into the area today as high pressure remains in the region. While we will see mostly sunny to clear skies the rest of the day, high temperatures will only reach the mid teens. However, it will be colder due to the northwest wind blowing at 5 to 10 miles per hour.

It feels like temperatures will remain in the single digits this afternoon, but will drop below zero late in the evening.

Such temperatures can quickly lead to frostbite and possibly hypothermia. As we all take the opportunity to shovel our way out of the significant winter snow system, we have seen over the last two days that we need to exercise caution while shoveling this afternoon. This means that the main body parts, including the face around the nose, mouth and ears, are layered and covered. Be sure to also wear gloves when shoveling.

Even though the air is concentrated, your breathing can also cause damage due to the cold in your throat and lungs. This means that when the weather is warm, it’s a good idea to take breaks and perhaps enjoy a warm meal or drink to get your body up to temperature.

As for pets, if you keep your pets mostly indoors and let them out to go to the bathroom and play, today will be a day of quick bathroom breaks, but you’ll mostly stay inside. Outdoor walks are not recommended as these cold and slippery conditions can be dangerous.

These cold conditions will continue into Tuesday and even Wednesday. For this reason, First Warn Weather Days were declared. Highs will remain in the teens, lows will be below zero or in the single digits.

The risk of hypothermia or frostbite is extremely high under these conditions and must be taken seriously. Even with salt and brine, it can be difficult for the ice to melt, so road conditions are still difficult.

There are signs of a rise in temperatures towards the end of this week. The high pressure that caused this cold Canadian Arctic air is beginning to shift eastward, allowing for a southerly component with the wind. Unfortunately, behind this high pressure system there is another low pressure area that is trying to penetrate from the southwest.

Temperatures are expected to rise to above 20°C to below 30°C near freezing. However, we now expect greater confidence in snow shower activity early Friday morning continuing throughout the day. We don’t expect anything as significant as what we’ve seen in the last 48 hours, but another snow event with any new snow accumulation will only make it even harder to get us out of the snow.

The details of this next low pressure area are currently being worked on. However, we can say that we can see isolated snow showers with more confidence this day. The main low pressure area is still expected to remain to the south at this point, so we only know the northern edges of the storm system. If we can keep this in the forecast over the next few days, accumulation should be low.
