Dark, stormy weather for Christmas week in Seattle

We are forecasting cloudy, wet and gusty weather for most of the coming week across Western Washington.

Milder than normal temperatures are forecast for Saturday afternoon in Seattle.

Very early this morning, moderately strong winds swept through the Cascade Gap communities (e.g. North Bend and Enumclaw). After 7 a.m. the wind gradually died down.

Western Washington Weather: Coastal Wind Warnings

We also observed winds along the central and northern coasts. There is a wind warning there until 2 p.m. With gusts up to 45-50 mph, tree damage and power outages are possible.

Speaking of the coast, there is a heavy surf warning for the south coast of Washington (including the Long Beach Peninsula) until 10 p.m. Monday. Dangerously large, breaking waves, up to 25 to 30 feet high in the surf zone, could easily knock people off beaches and jetties. Please maintain sufficient distance from the water until these conditions change.

What to expect with wind this week

Today will be windy, with gusts reaching around 20-35 mph in the lowlands of Puget Sound. Sunday will be stormy for many communities, but Seattle will likely shelter from the winds tomorrow. I don’t expect the gusts to be a problem on Sunday.

Occasional wind may occur at times on Monday, Christmas, Thursday and Friday. While a major storm this week does not appear particularly likely at this time, there may be minor to moderate impacts from winds at times. There is still uncertainty about the timing and strength of this week’s winds. Stay with us for the latest! We will inform you if the forecast develops further and impacts are to be expected.

Rain forecast for Seattle for Christmas week

As for rain, we forecast a daily chance of rain. Unfortunately, due to the frequency of weather events, river flooding could be a concern through the end of the week. The risk of landslides could also increase around and after Christmas. The heaviest rain in Western Washington is expected to arrive on Christmas and beyond.

In the short term, we have a flood watch in place for Mason County, where the Skokomish River may flood, from Sunday morning through Sunday night.

Mountain snow in western Washington

We expect rain on the main mountain passes today, but snow could occur daily on Stevens and White Pass starting Sunday and throughout the week. It could snow at Snoqualmie Pass on Christmas Day. We will keep a close eye on the updates.

Snow is possible at Snoqualmie Pass on Christmas (Wednesday).
