DAVID MARCUS: MAGA’s H-1B “Civil War” is exactly how politics is supposed to work

Two pieces of very good news emerged from the power struggle over H-1B visas for foreign skilled workers in Trump World this week. The first happy coincidence is that tensions are already easing, much to the chagrin of liberals who were hoping to witness a lasting split.

The second, even better development, is that both sides of the admittedly lively debate listened, compromised, and arrived at better and clearer positions for the future of the Republican Party.

In the red corner were the two heads of the Department of Government Efficiency, Vivek Ramaswamy and Elon Musk, who initially appeared to call for an expansion of the H-1B visa program, which allows employers to use foreign workers if they cannot find qualified Americans.

In the other red corner, we had Steve Bannon and a number of prominent “America Firsts” all but calling for an end to the Skilled Foreign Worker Program, a policy that would undoubtedly cause significant chaos and disruption.

On Saturday, President-elect Trump spoke out, so to speak, telling the New York Post that he likes the visa program and is using it himself, but he did not support expanding it. And of course, this is the same Trump who fired Tennessee Valley Authority board members for using foreign workers instead of Americans.

On Sunday morning, as the parents quietly drank coffee and checked the news on their cell phones and the children got some sleep before church, the situation in this spontaneous immigration debate had calmed down significantly.

For his part, after an ill-advised X piece this week in which he criticized American families for having more sleepovers and movie nights than their South Asian counterparts, Ramaswamy has stepped back from his cultural high point and turned his attention to the real problem.

The only real losers from this mess are the Democrats and liberal speakers who hoped they would watch MAGA tear itself apart.

Meanwhile, Musk arguably brought the issue even further into focus when he posted late Saturday evening that the excesses of the H-1B visa program “can be easily remedied by significantly raising the minimum salary and reducing annual costs of maintaining the H-1B visa program.” 1B visa program”. This makes it much more expensive to hire employees abroad than at home.”

Or as Musk ally and head of Trump’s artificial intelligence office, David Sacks, put it: “Elon has said that H1B should be overhauled, that it should focus on exceptional talent in high-value fields, and that the scams and low-paying jobs should do this.” End. That’s not to say there aren’t still differences, but fewer than it first seemed. It’s time to move forward as a team.’

That’s music to the ears of the America First audience, and great news for the young American architect or graphic designer who just wants a level playing field without continually losing out to cheap foreign competition.

Meanwhile, the Bannonistas, who stood by Trump from the start a decade ago, are softening their attacks on newcomers Ramaswamy and Musk, acknowledging that they are all on the same team.

The only real losers from this mess are the Democrats and liberal speakers who hoped they would watch MAGA tear itself apart. While Republicans sort out their differences, the left isn’t just munching popcorn, it’s eating crow.

There are some lessons to be learned from the recent troubles. At one point, some of the pro-H-1B supporters and some on the left accused the opponents of anti-South Asian racism, a terrible lie and an even worse message. Luckily this didn’t last long.

And it’s important that the common leftist tactic of pointing and screaming racism didn’t work, because these are the very fights that are making our foreign enemies salivate with their trolling social media bot farms, and they’re having this week Worked overtime to divide Americans.

Luckily it failed.

In the end, tempers cooled and the discourse shifted back towards friendliness and good faith. What we are left with is a fruitful and heated debate on a nuanced issue.

Of course the United States wants to attract the best and brightest to chart a technological course forward, but we also don’t want to tell a truck driver that the kid he’s sending to college will be passed over for cheaper foreign counterparts.

We have an opportunity to balance these concerns about recruiting the best from other countries while not taxing the performance of our own citizens. Compromises are actually possible. It might not always look like a church event, it might be a little rough around the edges, but as a wise man once said, “Politics is not a bean bag.”

Trump takes office in about three weeks, and it bodes well for his next four years as president that those who serve and support him can not only argue forcefully but also come together with honest give-and-take when necessary .

The H-1B battle proved not to be a crisis in MAGAland, but rather a roadmap for compromise and competent governance.
