DC Snow Forecast: Heavy snow moves across the DMV; Winter storm warning in effect

Heavy snow will move across the Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia areas early Monday morning.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for D.C., central and northern Maryland and northern Virginia that is in effect until 1 a.m. Tuesday. Heavy snowfall is expected to continue, with total accumulations of 5 to 10 inches. If banding is severe, isolated spots may potentially reach more than 12 inches in length. Ice accumulation is also possible.

Untreated and unplowed roads can become impassable, and even major roads could become impassable during the heaviest snowfalls. Non-essential travel is strongly discouraged.

Snowfall rates between 1 and 3 inches per hour are possible through mid-morning. From late morning to early afternoon there will be a break with intermittent light snow, sleet or freezing drizzle. A second snowfall is expected in the late afternoon and evening before rainfall ends tonight.

Motorists are advised to exercise extreme caution if driving is necessary. It is recommended to keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. For the latest road conditions, call 511.

Residents are urged to stay informed and consider postponing all travel until conditions improve.
