A deadly attack casts a shadow over the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans

First, we know that the city of New Orleans was affected by a terrorist attack. THAT’S ALL. STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION. AFTER ME YOU WILL HEAR MORE. WHAT I ASK NOW ARE PRAYERS FOR THOSE WHO HAVE LOST THEIR LIVES DUE TO THIS TRAGEDY IN THE CITY OF NEW ORLEANS. Additionally, I ask the public to stay away from eight blocks around Bourbon Street. Stay away from BOURBON STREET, eight blocks in the area are very active and there is a unified command here as well. I’ll ask Chief Kirkpatrick to give you an update. We’ll give you an update a few times today. So this morning we’re just giving you the basics. IN ORDER. WE STARTED THIS EVENT AT AROUND 315. This involved a man who was driving a pickup truck very quickly down Bourbon Street. And it was very deliberate behavior. THIS MAN TRIED TO RUN AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE. IT WAS NOT A DUI SITUATION. Based on the information we currently have, the situation is more complex and serious. As far as numbers go, we have it right now. And as you already know, this could change throughout the day. We know there are 26 injured people at UMC Hospital. WE KNOW WE HAVE FOUR. ATURO, FOUR AT OCHSNER BAPTIST, ONE AT TULANE. BUT EVEN AS I WALK OUT THE DOOR I BELIEVE I HAVE AN UNCONFIRMED ADDITIONAL PERSON WHO WAS BROUGHT TO OTHER HOSPITALS IN THE AREA, POSSIBLY ON THE EAST SIDE. BUT WE WILL GIVE YOU AS MANY CORRECT NUMBERS AS POSSIBLE DURING THE DAY. It’s a very tragic situation for me to tell you that we know that we have ten people, that man was killed on Bourbon Street, so we don’t want anyone on Bourbon Street today. Wherever you see yellow tape, please do not hurt this tape. THIS IS TO PROTECT AND STABILIZE THE SCENE. We have some information about the demographics of those currently in the hospital. We don’t know at this point how many tourists will be compared to locals. BUT FROM THE INFORMATION I HAVE RIGHT NOW IT APPEARS THAT THE MAJORITY ARE LOCAL AND TOURISTS. What I can also tell you is that this man, this perpetrator, shot at our officers from his vehicle when he crashed his vehicle. Two of our officers were shot. THEY ARE STABLE AND WE WILL GIVE YOU AN UPDATE ON THEM. I COULD STILL GO TO THE HOSPITAL. I’m going to leave here so we can visit our officials. We called in every one of our officers. WE VERY APPRECIATE OUR PARTNERSHIPS, WHO HAVE ALSO OFFERED US EMPLOYEES. We had over 300 officers out here last night and because of the deliberate mindset of this perpetrator who bypassed our barricades to carry this out, he was determined to cause the carnage and the damage that he did because of the nature and the indices that have that we are on site and we have enough information about it. The FBI will take over this investigation. AND SO I WILL ASK: This is the assistant agent in charge. As tourists descended on New Orleans to watch the Sugar Bowl at Caesars Superdome on New Year’s Day, police crowded onto Bourbon Street. At least 10 people were killed and 26 injured when a pickup truck “deliberately” drove into a crowd. NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said she wants the community and visitors to “continue to enjoy” New Orleans despite the tragedy. “We’re going to make sure our routes and our Superdome are safe for the game today and yet we had this tragic event and we’re all sorry, but we want you to get through the day and just stay away from Bourbon Street.” , she said. Sugar Bowl officials issued the following statement regarding the attack: “The Sugar Bowl Committee is devastated by the horrific events of the early morning. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. “We are in ongoing discussions with local, state and federal authorities and will provide additional details as they become available,” said Jeff Hundley, Chief Executive Officer. At least 10 people were killed and 26 injured when a pickup truck “deliberately” drove into a crowd.

NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said she wants the community and visitors to “continue to enjoy” New Orleans despite the tragedy.

“We’re going to make sure that our routes and our Superdome are safe for the game today and yet we had this tragic event and we’re all sorry, but we want you to go about the day and just stay away from Bourbon Street ” she said.

Sugar Bowl officials issued the following statement regarding the attack:

“The Sugar Bowl Committee is devastated by the horrific events of early morning. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. “We are in ongoing discussions with local, state and federal authorities and will provide additional details as they become available,” said Jeff Hundley, Chief Executive Officer.

It’s unclear if the game will still be played given current events.

The 91st annual Sugar Bowl takes place Wednesday in New Orleans at Caesars Superdome.
