DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE Star Ryan Reynolds Closes Door on DEADPOOL 4; Suggests a return as a supporting character

Deadpool and Wolverine is one of the biggest films of 2024, but as of this writing, there are no confirmed plans for Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in the MCU.

Both characters return Avengers: End of the World and/or Avengers: Secret Wars seems like a given, but Marvel Studios and Disney must be excited about it Deadpool 4especially if it too breaks all those box office records, after what has proven to be a tough few years for superhero movies.

Speaking to Andrew Garfield for Variety’s Actors on Actors, Reynolds was asked by the Spider-Man actor what the future holds for the Merc with the Mouth.

“I don’t know it. Honestly, I feel like the character works very well in two ways. For one thing, it’s scarcity and surprise.” he explained. “So it’s been six years since the last one, and that’s partly because it’s consuming my entire life. I have four children and I never want to be an absent (father).”

“I’m dying inside when I see their faces and they’re playing sports or something, and I missed it.” Reynolds continued. “I don’t know what the future of ‘Deadpool’ will look like, but I know that we made the film a complete experience and not a commercial for another.”

With that, the actor seemed to close the door Deadpool 4 by sharing his belief that Wade Wilson is probably better suited as a supporting character in future films.

“Deadpool is much more of a supporting character than he is the focus.” Reynolds began. “Sometimes we center it because that’s what they want, but you can’t center it unless you take everything away from it. You have to create a situation where he is so much the underdog. I don’t think I can do this again.”

“When he comes back, it will be in another film. Channing Tatum… I would love to be a fifth banana in his movie or anyone else.”

Things can always change, especially when there is money on the table. At the moment it sounds like Reynolds would like to play second fiddle to other MCU characters, but whether Secret wars will serve as his and the Fox-verse’s final farewell remains to be seen. It certainly feels that way and we’re wondering if Deadpool will be recast after the Multiverse Saga.

For Reynolds, it seems to be all about making sure people miss the character rather than giving them too much of a good thing.

“I love how you did that in Spider-Man: No Way Home.” he said to Garfield. “You weave DNA strands of a cultural conversation into the narrative of the film. You did it in such a way that I burst into tears.”

“One of the best feelings I ever had was sitting in Hall H at Comic-Con and watching Wesley Snipes and people crying. They immediately realize that they missed this person so much, but they didn’t know “they missed him”, Reynolds concluded.
