Deaths were reported in New Orleans when a vehicle apparently crashed into the crowd on Bourbon Street

There were reports of multiple deaths early Wednesday after a vehicle plowed into a crowd on Bourbon Street in New Orleans’ French Quarter. The popular tourist district would have been busy in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

Witnesses told CBS News reporter Kati Weis that a truck drove at high speed into a crowd on Bourbon Street, then the driver got out and started firing a gun, prompting police to return fire.

Weis saw several people on the ground being treated for their injuries.

A spokesperson for the New Orleans Police Department told CBS News: “Initial reports indicate that a car may have driven into a group of people. There are no known injuries, but fatalities have been reported.”
