December 23 Winter Weather Advisory for morning ice on Christmas Eve

December 23 Winter Weather Advisory for morning ice on Christmas Eve

December 23, 2024

Monday morning report

This morning is just as cold or even colder than yesterday morning, which will be felt by people who still work regularly. It is a signal that the atmosphere has been sufficiently cooled with the snow to the north AND radiative cooling on a clear and calm night.

This puts us ahead of the next weak clipper ship that will arrive tomorrow morning. Arrival on Christmas Eve may be hindered by light snowfall or freezing rain in the morning. A winter weather warning has been issued, which I will discuss in more detail below.

Christmas looks cold and dry, with more light snow on Thursday.

Looking forward, there is disagreement in computer modeling about the warm-up at the end of the year and the subsequent GREAT COOLING at the beginning of 2025.

Outlook for 2025

I still think we’re going to get some very cold air and I’m not promoting the big storm that hit social media yesterday.

That’s why I don’t trust any winter storm ground that’s more than a week away…

Even the European model has its flaws. Just 12 hours apart, the model turned around and lost the monster storm it showed in early January.

Jet stream:

The European model has the deep pressure of cold air. The GFS model warms us and delays the cold air for a few days.

December 23 Jetstream January

7 day forecast

The cold is expected to continue into early next week and then return to seasonal averages after Christmas.

The last week of the year will see a rise in warmer temperatures, with a switch to the pattern described above around New Year’s Day.

REPEATING MY MESSAGE ON THE TOPIC OF LEGEND

I understand that there are some spelling and grammatical errors, as well as occasional other errors. I take responsibility for my mistakes and even the computer errors I may miss. I’ve made a few public statements over the years, but if you’re new here you may have missed it: I have dyslexia and found out about it in my sophomore year at Cornell University. However, that didn’t stop me from getting my degree in meteorology and being the first to receive the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington area. One of my professors told me that I had made it this far without knowing it and that I shouldn’t let it be a crutch for the future. That was Mark Wysocki, and he was absolutely right! I miss my mistakes when proofreading myself. The automatic spell checker on my computer sometimes misses the mark and makes the problem worse. I can also make mistakes in forecasting. Nobody is perfect at predicting the future. All maps and information are correct. The “wordy” stuff can get sticky. There was no editor to review my work when writing and have it ready to ship in a newsworthy time frame. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this website. She has made it her mission to correct typos when available. That could be AFTER you read this. I accept that and perhaps prove that what you read is really mine… It’s part of my charm. #FITF
