HICKSVILLE, Ohio – An earthquake struck in parts of Defiance County near Hicksville early Sunday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Earthquake Information Center.

According to the USGS, the earthquake struck at 6:46 a.m. Sunday morning, just before sunrise, southeast of Hicksville, a village of just 3,000 residents.

An earthquake in Defiance County is very rare. There are no known disturbances near the area. In fact, there had never been a recorded earthquake in Defiance County before Sunday, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

The earthquake had a magnitude of 2.9 and a depth of 9.5 km.

The last earthquake in northwest Ohio before the Hicksville earthquake occurred on April 22, 2024 in Walbridge.

The Hicksville earthquake is the most powerful earthquake to occur in northwest Ohio in the past 25 years.
