Demand the 49ers cut ties with the $71 million superstar via trade

The San Francisco 49ers have invested a lot of money in their offense, but given salary cap concerns, they could move one of their big-name players.

While Bleacher Report’s David Kenyon listed the most valuable players heading into the offseason, he listed Deebo Samuel and called for the 49ers to move him in hopes of making room for players. He noted that he is the 49ers’ most expendable wideout.

“In the near future, the Niners need to sign a huge contract for Brock Purdy. You might not think he’s worth more than $50 million per season, but that’s the going rate for quarterbacks these days. “The Niners will have to make some financial sacrifices, and Samuel could be a victim of that,” Kenyon wrote. “In addition, Samuel is the most expendable wide receiver on the roster. “San Francisco recently extended both Brandon Aiyuk and Jauan Jennings and used its first-round pick on Ricky Pearsall in the 2024 draft.”

The 49ers signed Brandon Aiyuk to a four-year, $120 million deal before the season. They also recently drafted Ricky Pearsall and extended Juan Jennings. Samuel will be 29 next season and has one year left on his contract. The 49ers’ depth at wide receiver coupled with the impending contract for Brock Purdy make him a likely trade candidate.

While Samuel does more than just catch passes for the 49ers, his production doesn’t live up to the price. He has not had a 1,000-yard receiving season since his Pro Bowl season in 2021. He has scored nine rushing touchdowns in that span, after having eight in 2021 alone. He has 2,571 scrimmage yards since the start of 2022.

Trading Samuel may not be the move fans want, but the 49ers’ recent moves suggest it’s within the realm of possibility.
