Democratic senator’s ‘lies and stupidities’ at Hegseth hearing spread across social media: ‘clown show’

Social media users are criticizing a Democratic senator for claiming that Defense Secretary nominee Pete Hegseth would lead a military invasion of Greenland if nominated.

A confirmation hearing for Hegseth was held in the Senate Armed Services Committee on Tuesday, giving lawmakers a chance to question Trump’s defense decision. One Democrat in particular, Sen. Mazie Hirono of Hawaii, sparked a firestorm of reactions on social media when she asked Hegseth whether he would invade Greenland or take over the Panama Canal.

“Trump never gives his hand strategically. “I would never publicly explain how he should direct the president’s orders one way or another,” Hegseth said in response to the question.

“Hirono played judge, jury and executioner based on lies and stupidity,” Rep. Nancy Mace, R-R-S.C., wrote in a post on X.

Brigette Gabriel, founder and chair of ACT for America, wrote: “Mazie Hirono may be the least intelligent member of Congress, and that’s saying something.”

“This type of questioning is not consistent with her position as a United States Senator,” Gabriel said on X. “I stand with Pete Hegseth.”

Hegseth was an “incredibly talented, battle-hardened leader,” military assessments show

During the hearing, Hirono claimed that President-elect Donald Trump ordered guards to “shoot protesters in the legs” during a protest rally at Layfayette Square in Washington, D.C. in 2020 and questioned whether Hegseth would carry out such an order.

“I was in the Washington, D.C. National Guard unit that was in Lafayette Square during these events, holding up a shield on behalf of my country,” Hegseth responded. “I saw 50 Secret Service agents injured by riot forces.”

Hirono also questioned Hegseth about the allegations of sexual assault and allegations that he drank on the job – both of which he has repeatedly denied.

“Clown show,” wrote Eric Daughtery, deputy news director for Florida’s Voice.

“Mazie Hirono spreads discredited NBC anonymous sources who claimed Pete Hegseth was constantly drunk at work,” wrote Greg Price.
