Democrats ‘largely happy’ with Biden’s absence during shutdown talks: ‘Little clamor for his return’

President Biden’s disappearance during negotiations over a spending bill to fund the government last Friday is just fine with Democrats, according to a new report.

“Biden remained conspicuously absent outside of a brief statement from his press secretary — and for now, Democrats said there was little demand for his return,” Politico reported Thursday, a day after Elon Musk and President-elect Donald Trump defeated the first bipartisan spending bill.

The article said that despite efforts to avert a government shutdown, “no one seemed to be looking to Biden for answers — and the lame-duck president gave no indication of any desire to provide them.”

“I have not received any communication from President Biden or heard of anything he says,” California Democratic Rep. Mark Takano told Politico, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries would not say he has been in contact with Biden , but only that he was in “close contact with the administration”.

As Politico put it, “Democrats appeared to be largely doing well while Biden faded into the background.”

Even during a House Democratic caucus, “there was no consideration of Biden’s own views on the standoff,” and members instead “demonstratively referred to Musk as ‘President Musk.’

Biden allies argued that the silence was “a strategic decision” to enable Trump to “take the blame for any shutdown … and inflict political damage on him even before he takes office.”

Still, Politico reported that Democrats spoke only to White House staff during that time, with no direct line to the current president confirmed.

Biden had spent all day Wednesday at his home in Wilmington, Delaware, as the White House called for a lid on the bipartisan bill after it was rejected. He remained there Thursday and remained silent because there was nothing on his public schedule.

“(The president’s absence) underscores a jarring reality that officials in both parties say has become clear since the November election: While Biden is still technically running the country, Trump — and increasingly Musk — are now the real captains.” said Politico.

Politico’s report was followed by a bombshell from the Wall Street Journal, which revealed that several Biden aides noticed his waning stamina as early as the first months of his 2021 presidency.
