Denver’s New Year’s Eve fireworks display set to be ‘higher and brighter,’ officials say | things to do

In typical Mile High City fashion, Denver plans to bring the boom to two downtown rooftops to ring in 2025.

Whether you head out early or party until midnight, there are two ways to watch the fireworks downtown on Tuesday. At 9:00 p.m. and midnight, a nine-minute fireworks display will be launched simultaneously from the roof of the historic Sheraton Hotel and the U.S. Bank Building in downtown Denver.

Denver began its annual rooftop fireworks display in 2000.

A makeshift countdown kicked off the fireworks display for children who might not be able to attend the midnight version.

According to Zambelli Fireworks operations manager Zach Taminosian and city partners, this year’s show is expected to be “taller” and “brighter” compared to previous years’ New Year’s Eve fireworks displays.

When the time comes, Taminsoian will trigger the display using computerized software.

“It’s a great honor to be able to entertain a whole bunch of people,” he said.

The experienced pyrotechnician said putting on fireworks on a rooftop was a “laborious” process.

“We’re 26 to 28 stories tall, as opposed to what a traditional fireworks display would normally be,” Taminosian said. “That means a lot of stairs and lifting elevators.”

The nine-minute fireworks display requires extensive planning, including setting up soundtracks, type of fireworks (“flowers”) and timing.

“People will always remember the beginning and especially the end,” Taminosian said, hinting at what could be an unforgettable New Year’s Eve show.

Zembelli, a family-owned pyrotechnics company for nearly 100 years, organizes fireworks displays across the country. The Colorado Rockies are among a number of professional sports teams that turn to Zambelli for fireworks shows.

Sharon Alton, senior vice president of the Downtown Denver Partnership, which co-sponsors the show, suggested watching the fireworks from either the 16th Street Mall, Civic Center Park or other open vantage points downtown.

“We had the story in downtown Denver,” she said of what sets Denver’s celebration apart from the rest. “We have always tried to host vibrant events to attract people…we have a lot of great private and public partnerships. The community really helps us get this done.”

Participating in the partnership, according to its website, is VISIT DENVER, the “private, nonprofit trade association responsible for marketing the Denver metropolitan area as a meeting and leisure destination.”

“With the fireworks, with all the shows, with the live performances, the music, the hotel packages, the dinner packages, there are so many reasons to come downtown,” said Taylor Shields, director of public relations for VISIT DENVER.

“One of the things I love is that there is a different New Year for everyone,” Shields said.

In addition to Denver’s rooftop fireworks display, this year’s Ball Drop will take place at the Mile High Tree in Civic Center Park at 9 p.m. and midnight. The final Mile High Drone Show of the year begins at 5:30 p.m. Recommended locations for the drone show include the Tivoli Quad on the Auraria Campus and Sculpture Park at the Denver Performing Arts Center.

Other celebrations include the Denver All Access NYE Bar Crawl, the Decadence electronic music festival at the Colorado Convention Center, Noon Year’s Eve at the Children’s Museum, the Denver Black Tie NYE Balloon Drop Party, the White Rose Gala Gatsby and some pop-up holiday bars.
