Despite the loss, Ohio State remains ahead of several key SEC teams

The ESPN FPI rankings were updated following Rivalry Week, the final week of the college football regular season. With only conference championship games remaining between us and the playoffs, teams will be watching closely to see where they land this postseason.

In the updated ESPN Football Power Index rankings, Texas retained its top spot after a win over rival Texas A&M. However, former No. 2 team Ohio State was eliminated. The problem? The Buckeyes fell just one spot despite losing at home to an unranked Michigan team.

Here’s a look at the current FPI Top 25, with Ohio State still ahead of key SEC teams like Alabama and Georgia:

  1. Texas
  2. Notre Dame
  3. Ohio State
  4. Alabama
  5. Georgia
  6. Oregon
  7. Tennessee
  8. Ole Miss
  9. Penn State
  10. Indiana
  11. Miami

Will the College Football Playoff Committee feel the same way about the Buckeyes? Or will Ohio State fall further behind in the penultimate CFP rankings, which will be released Tuesday?

Ten of the 16 SEC teams were among the top 25 teams this week. The only SEC teams that didn’t make it were Oklahoma (26), Auburn (29), Arkansas (36), Vanderbilt (39), Kentucky (49) and Mississippi State (69).
