Detroit Lions can secure NFC 1-Seed and NFC North in the final two weeks

The Detroit Lions are one step closer to their lofty goal in the regular season.

The Lions defeated the Chicago Bears 34-17 on the road on Sunday afternoon to move to 13-2 and maintain their position at the top of the highly competitive NFC. It’s the most wins the Lions have ever won in a season, but they still have competition to repeat as NFC North champions from the Minnesota Vikings. Heading into the week, the Lions, Vikings and Philadelphia Eagles were atop the NFC at 12-2 in a close battle for the top spot.

The Lions’ clear goal all season was to assert themselves as NFC North champions and secure first place in the conference to give themselves one fewer playoff game and home-field advantage all the way to the Super Bowl.

The Eagles were stunned by the Washington Commanders 36-33 on a last-second touchdown at the same time the Lions were playing the Bears. The Vikings defeated the Seattle Seahawks 24:21 and were able to keep up with the Lions.

With their win in Chicago and the Eagles’ loss, the Lions are just one win and some help away from securing not only the division but also the No. 1 seed in the NFC.

At 13-2, the Lions now have a one-game lead over Philadelphia with two games remaining. Detroit also has the tiebreaker against the Eagles despite not playing them because they have a better record against NFC opponents, meaning they will eliminate Philadelphia from the 1-seed race with a win next week , regardless of the Eagles’ result.

The help part comes on the Minnesota side of things. The Lions must beat the San Francisco 49ers and the Vikings must lose at home to the Green Bay Packers for the Lions to secure first place after Week 17.

If the Vikings beat Green Bay and the Lions beat San Francisco, Detroit and Minnesota will play a winner-take-all game in Week 18 for both the division and first place at Ford Field. The start time (along with all other Week 18 games) has yet to be determined due to the potential stakes of the matchup. The NFL will set start times for the final weekend of games according to next week’s lineup.
