Detroit Lions react to Bears win and celebrate Eagles loss

Here is a collection of postgame quotes from Detroit Lions players and coaches via the team’s social media channel following their 34-17 win over the Chicago Bears in Week 16.

Dan Campbell

On the hunt for number one and what that means for the team:

“I don’t know if I can take advantage of it like the players do at the moment because I’m just trying to recover from this game. Afterwards I become quite emotionally drained. I know it’s exciting to be where we are. That’s it really. That’s why I think you want to train and play in this league. That’s the eye-opening moment when the competition is at its highest, people are breathing down your neck, or you’re chasing someone and you’re at the top. It just doesn’t get any better. That’s what it’s about. Can it be frustrating, can it be stressful? Yes, it gets all that. But it’s also the drug. It’s the drug. That’s what you live for. Look, some people can’t do that. Some people can’t handle it. It’s too much for her. Players, coaches, teams, it’s just too much. But not our group. That’s the good thing, man, and we’re in the middle of it right now.”

Jared Goff

On Jamyr Gibbs’ performance as lead running back:

We always knew it. We always knew he could do it and that was evident today. I thought it ran great. I thought he had a great look at it. I saw that he was doing great out of the backfield. Then I thought Craig (Reynolds) and Jermar (Jefferson) were great in their own way too, and then (Sione) Vaki at the end of the half they made some plays. Those guys stepped in really well today and made sure it wasn’t just him, he did a hell of a job.”

Amon-Ra St. Brown

On the upcoming rematch of last season’s NFC Championship game:

“I think for me personally, I want to win. I remember the feeling when I left the field last year, it didn’t feel good. Of course we all want to win. I don’t know if it’s addressed or not, but I feel like every player that was here last year knows the feeling we had last year and we want to go in there and hopefully come out with a dub. But we have to prepare properly. They are a good team. I feel like the record they have doesn’t really show what kind of team they are. They can score points quickly and have good defense.”

Last year’s NFC Championship loss ranks among the biggest losses of his career:

“I played a few, not really big games in college, but in high school, you think those are the biggest games of your life. I lost in CIF when I was in high school, my junior year, so that hurt. But I would say that game was probably one of the worst L’s I’ve had in my life, in my football career. Just the way it all played out was like something out of a horror movie. But we are back, a new year, we have the chance to redeem ourselves. I think we’re pretty excited.”

Jahmyr Gibbs

On whether he’s surprised when Ben Johnson creates a piece like “Stumble Bum”:

“Now I’m not. It used to be me. Now it’s just: I expect something every week.”

On whether it would have felt different when David Montgomery was out:

“Yeah, it felt kind of weird. I came back and said, ‘Whose drive is this?’ They would say, ‘It’s yours.’ And then it felt good.”

Jameson Williams

On Washington’s win over Philadelphia and the excitement in the locker room:

“We’re just trying to secure the number one spot while we continue to focus on winning the next two games. Winning at number one will help us a lot, we often struggle with injuries, give ourselves some rest in the first week and then come back and we would have home advantage. I think that’s important to us, but it doesn’t really concern us. Someone just came in and started the game.

On his taunting penalty and the back and forth with Tyrique Stevenson:

“I didn’t see any back and forth today. On the first play I caught the ball and turned it over. I didn’t even say anything to him, he didn’t tell me anything. I just turned the ball. I think the flag came from their sideline overreacting. Everybody was like, “Oh, oh, oh.” But people turn the ball over when they make big catches. You probably watch the game and see the ball being turned over 12 times today. We didn’t say anything to each other today. And the last game is just football. There’s no static or beef, none of that. We just go out and play football and emotions run high when you’re there. He wants to win, I want to win, so we will do everything we can to win.”

Sam LaPorta

To perform the trick game “Stumble Bum”:

“Yeah, it was great. Ben is as creative as they come. It was great to go out there and make that happen. All 10 other guys ran it, so it was cool to take that off the call list and score a touchdown there.”

What it means for the team that the Commanders beat the Eagles:

“We would like to organize and supervise the games ourselves. When other people help us, all the power lies with them. But we want to win the next two games and get the one spot without all the other things, but I think it’s good that Washington won, like you tell me.”

Josh Paschal

On his fumble recovery in the first quarter:

“It felt great. Just a muffled exchange on a jet sweep and I was able to get to it before the receiver got there. It was just good to get the momentum on our side.”

On the second fumble with multiple players trying to knock the ball out:

“Exactly. It’s all about maximum effort and flying around. BB and Mitch Agude are just coming in and getting the ball out. That’s a lot just for a defense to have two takeaways in the first half. And our offense, one Having offense like we do just gives them a boost. When you have an offense like that and you give them the ball twice in the first half, it’s hard to beat us.”

Ifeatu Melifonwu

On the coaches who had the confidence to use him so much after missing the first 14 games of the year:

“That’s a lot. The fact that I missed so many games and they had the trust to bring me back straight away is huge and I appreciate all the coaches. And I think they know that.”

On whether he felt ready to go or had to work through some rust in his first game:

“No, I think I had to knock some rust off. I got going, especially in the first quarter and towards the end. I started to get my wind back.”
