Detroit Lions vs. Chicago Bears score today: Live updates, highlights from NFC North battle

The Detroit Lions are back on the road Sunday for another outdoor divisional game in Week 16 of the NFL season.

The Lions (12-2) travel to face the Chicago Bears (4-10) on Sunday afternoon to close the series with their NFC North rival. The Lions won the first game on Thanksgiving 23-20, which led to the firing of Bears coach Matt Eberflus.

The Lions suffered their second loss of the season after losing 48-42 at home to the Buffalo Bills. The Bears have lost eight straight games, including a 30-12 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Monday night.

The Lions lost three more defensive players to season-ending injuries, and last week’s loss also left running back David Montgomery out indefinitely with a knee injury. The Lions continue to employ the next-man-up mentality on defense and will rely on Jahmyr Gibbs as the lead back.

The Lions boast the highest-scoring offense in the NFL, averaging 32.8 points, led by quarterback Jared Goff. Chicago is in the bottom 10 in scoring and has scored just two touchdowns since its last game against the Lions, with the offense led by rookie quarterback Caleb Williams.

Detroit Lions vs Chicago Bears live updates, highlights

6:58, 1Q: Jahmyr Gibbs scores 1-yard TD on 3rd attempt; The Lions lead 10-0

The Lions called a screen to Jahmyr Gibbs on the first play after the turnover for a 23-yard gain to the 13th. He then scored an 8-yard gain on third-and-6 from the 9 for first-and-goal from the 1st. Gibbs was stuffed twice on straight handoffs but found a hole for a touchdown on his third attempt.

8:27, 1Q: Caleb Williams fumbles, Josh Paschal recovers

The Lions forced a turnover for the first time in two weeks. Caleb Williams attempted to pass the ball to fellow rookie Rome Odunze with a jet sweep, but Odunze was unable to secure the ball and it fell to the dirt. Josh Paschal, in position to set the lead, was right there to attack the ball at the Chicago 36-yard line.

9:38, 1Q: Jake Bates hits 30-yard FG; The Lions lead 3-0

The Lions’ offense hummed into the Bears’ red zone, but failed in the red zone. The Lions had a third-and-2 from Chicago’s 13 and Detroit called a pass, but Jared Goff had to throw it away due to Chicago’s good coverage. Jahmyr Gibbs had four carries for 20 yards, while Goff completed three of four passes for 50 yards, including a 28-yard completion to Amon-Ra St. Brown. Jameson Williams was charged with taunting for turning the ball over on the Chicago sideline in front of cornerback Tyrique Stevenson.

13:59, 1Q: Lions force punt in first minute

The Lions defense forced more punts against the Bills last week than they did in the entire 60 minutes. The Bears threw it on the first play, leading to an incompletion and a quick pitch at the line for a short gain, and another incompletion on third down for a three-and-out.

The Lions’ offense has more success, despite an early penalty on Jameson Williams.

Today’s uniforms: All white

As with every away game this year, the Lions will wear their all-white jerseys. The Lions are 6-0 on the road this season.

Lions push for Pro Bowl voting ahead of game

The Lions had 19 players in the top 10 for Pro Bowl voting at their respective positions in the latest round of fan voting released this week. But the Lions are trying to take advantage of the double counting of fan votes on Sunday by pairing social media giveaways of signed Lions jerseys with contributions to voting for the Pro Bowl.

Lions vs Bears predictions

Dave Birkett: The Lions may no longer be Las Vegas’ favorites to win the NFC, but the sky is far from falling. They still have enough firepower to clinch the No. 1 seed and a first-round playoff bye, and that starts with beating a mediocre Bears team this week. The Bears have suffered eight straight losses and have never recovered by firing Matt Eberflus as new coach on November 30, although this is their first home game since the change.

They are more talented than their record, but can’t score with a rookie quarterback like the Lions can. The Lions thrive when they play from the front, and they should be able to take the lead Sunday against a Bears team that hasn’t scored a point in the first half since Nov. 17. Gibbs appears poised for a big day as the Lions look to come back – establish the run, and when that happens the Lions will set a franchise single-season record with their 13Th win. The choice: Lions 35, Bears 21.
