The San Francisco 49ers have suspended linebacker De’Vondre Campbell for three games – the remainder of the regular season – after he refused to participate in his team’s game in the third quarter of a 12-6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport was first to report that the 49ers planned to suspend Campbell.

“We have suspended De’Vondre Campbell for three games for conduct detrimental to the team,” 49ers president of football operations and general manager John Lynch said in a statement released Monday. “We will have no further comment on this matter.”

Campbell was called into the game to replace Dre Greenlaw, who was returning from the Achilles tendon injury he suffered in last year’s Super Bowl, but told head coach Kyle Shanahan he would not play before heading to the locker room before the end went of the game.

In a phone call with reporters Friday, Shanahan said he doesn’t expect Campbell to be part of the team starting Week 16.

“His actions from the game are not something you can do to your team or your teammates and still expect to be part of our team,” he said.

Campbell also faced criticism from his teammates. Cornerback Charvarius Ward, playing in his third game since returning after his daughter’s death, said Thursday: “I mean, if he didn’t want to play, he shouldn’t have taken his clothes off, he could have told them that.” the game. So I feel like that was some stupid thing he did. Definitely hurt the team. Because Dee (Greenlaw) was out and we needed a linebacker.

“In my opinion this is pretty stupid. I probably will will be shortened soon, that’s it.”

Tight end George Kittle called Campbell’s decision “selfish,” adding, “It’s hard to win football games when someone doesn’t want to play football.”

With San Francisco having less than a 1% chance of making the playoffs according to the Next Gen Stats model, Campbell — who signed a one-year, $5 million contract in March — has almost certainly played his final game for the team.

Campbell goes to the locker room during the second half of the 12-6 loss to the Rams.

By choosing to suspend the former All-Pro instead of waiving him, San Francisco is ensuring that he cannot join another team. He will not be paid for the rest of the season either.

The 31-year-old moved to the 49ers as a replacement for the injured Greenlaw and had played 12 of 13 games before being substituted on Thursday.

Although he leaves the loss to the Rams, Greenlaw is expected to be healthy for San Francisco’s game against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.
