Dick Van Dyke is just days away from his big birthday and is celebrating with friends!

On Thursday, December 5, the legendary actor said during an appearance on the US television show ” Jimmy Kimmel Live!.

Along with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, who appeared on the late-night show to discuss the group’s “All My Love” video, Van Dyke – who stars in the music video – didn’t shy away from it , making fun of his age.

Martin, 47, recounted one of his favorite moments from the video shoot when Van Dyke’s son Barry, 73, approached him Mary Poppins actor and asked, “Dad, can I turn on the pool slide?”

“It was so sweet because it was like a son and his father,” Martin recalled as he and the audience laughed. “But they’re 176 (years old) combined,” he joked.

Fallon pointed out that not only is Van Dyke’s age impressive, but so are the ages of his children. Van Dyke is also the father of son Christian (74) and daughters Stacy (68) and Carrie (63).

“I’m old enough to be Joe Biden’s father,” he joked about the 82-year-old president.

Although Van Dyke shared that he suffers from dementia on and off, he said with a laugh, “Right now I think I’m there Jimmy Kimmel Show.”

“It happens to me too,” Kimmel assured. He also told a story about how he had seen Van Dyke earlier that day and asked him how he was doing.

“‘Very old,'” he said Van Dyke told him.

Over the course of his 70-year career, Van Dyke has captivated audiences with his iconic performances in films such as… Mary Poppins And Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and breaks records – including becoming the oldest Daytime Emmy winner for his role as Timothy Robicheaux Days of our lives in June – on the way.

In September, the respected actor joked that he was “looking for work” after winning an award for Outstanding Variety Special at the 2024 Creative Arts Emmy Awards for his 2023 birthday special. Dick Van Dyke 98 years of magic.

After accepting his award, he reflected on his illustrious career and answered questions from reporters.

“I’ve been in the business for 75 years. I can’t believe I’m still here performing,” he said before laughing. “I’m looking for work if anyone has it.”

When the entertainer turned 98 last year, he told PEOPLE that he planned to mark the occasion in a low-key manner, surrounded by several of his grandchildren.

“I don’t think much of tradition, I don’t think,” he said, explaining that he feels joy and gratitude “every day” of his life. He added: “My wife brings me a cup of coffee in the morning. I get it in bed. I’m treated like a king here.

While Van Dyke continues to live life on a grand scale, he admitted that his nineties came with an unexpected challenge – he outlived many of his friends, including Norman Lear, who died in December 2023 at the age of 101.

“I had a few friends there who said nice things, but Mary Tyler Moore, Morey (Amsterdam) and Rosie (Rose Marie), Carl Reiner, Norman Lear, all the people I’ve always loved and bonded with, are gone, so I “I need to make new friends,” he said.

“I’m happy that people are coming to me,” he added. “I don’t have to go out and look.”

Van Dyke will celebrate his 99th birthday on December 13, 2024.
