Did Queer’s Drew Starkey wear a prosthetic penis in the nude scene?

The conversation around Strange has finally arrived at the important question: Did Drew Starkey wear a prosthetic penis when he filmed his full frontal sex scenes?

In Luca Guadagnino’s film, an adaptation of William S. Burroughs’ 1985 novella, Drew Starkey plays discharged American Navy soldier Eugene Allerton, who has fallen in love with William Lee (Daniel Craig), an outcast and troubled American expat Alcohol and drug addicts in Mexico City.

Despite an age difference, Allerton’s sexual ambiguity and initial lack of interest, Lee’s advances eventually fall through and the pair end up heading into the South American jungle in search of a telepathy-inducing psychedelic.

The film contains a number of exhilarating sex scenes that Starkey and Craig fully invest in, the details of which were discussed in a recent interview.

Speaking to TIME Magazine about on-screen nudity, Starkey and Craig confirmed that they chose not to be fully nude in the film.

Craig’s two on-screen sex partners, Drew Starkey and singer-songwriter Omar Apollo, making his film debut Queer, Have nude scenes in the film. Starkey confirmed to TIME that he wore a prosthesis; Apollo has neither confirmed nor denied whether he used prosthetics in his full-frontal scenes.

When asked about his reasons for not appearing fully nude like his co-stars, Craig said: “They’re young. You are young and beautiful.”

Prosthetics are often used in filmmaking to ensure that an actor does not have to expose themselves. The technology also preserves the dignity and privacy of performers during sex scenes, which are often overseen by an intimacy coordinator.

When discussing filming the sex scenes, Starkey noted that movement rehearsals were essential for the actors to get used to each other and break the ice before filming.

He explained: “We have to embarrass ourselves in front of each other – and only achieve small successes in the choreography with each other.” That has embedded itself in everything.”

With similar praise for StrangeCraig noted: “Sex is wonderful, messy and complicated, and hopefully we’ve managed to bring that to the screen because that’s exactly what happens in the bedroom.”

“We chose that kind of vulnerability and kept it as real as possible.”

The pair have also both engaged in dialogue about straight actors playing gay roles, with Starkey exclusively revealing to PinkNews that he had “no concerns” about playing a queer character.

Rather, he considered the role – and the opportunity to work with Craig – a “blessing.”

Meanwhile, Craig said he doesn’t believe it’s his “responsibility” to represent the LGBTQ+ community.

He told the Associated Press: “I’m not sure I can do it, I don’t think this is my place. “This is too big a deal for anyone to take on.”

Strange is out now.
