“Doc Rivers calls Darvin Ham NBA Cup ‘secret weapon’ after Bucks win”

Darvin Ham has the NBA Cup figured out. The top assistant coach of the Milwaukee Bucks remained undefeated in the NBA Cup at 14-0 after beating the Oklahoma City Thunder 97-81 on Tuesday to win the title in the league’s second tournament of the season. Bucks head coach Doc Rivers also recognized Ham’s NBA Cup success.

Ham won the NBA’s first in-season tournament as head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers in 2023. After two seasons with the Lakers, he was relieved of his duties and joined Rivers’ staff in Milwaukee. As the Bucks began sailing through the 2024 Emirates NBA Cup, the basketball world took notice of Ham’s winning streak in cup play.

After the Bucks won the NBA Cup on Tuesday night, Rivers spoke about Ham’s uncharacteristic tear that dominated the tournament.

“By the way, we brought our secret weapon,” Rivers told reporters after the Bucks beat the Thunder. “Darvin Ham has been an undefeated coach in this cup for two years now.”

Rivers then admitted that he had another secret weapon on his team, one that was actually on the roster. Forward Taurean Prince was with Ham and the Lakers last season before signing a one-year deal with the Bucks this year.

“When I said that (about Ham),” Rivers continued. “(Prince) asked, ‘What about me?’ And he’s an undefeated player, so that’s pretty cool for them. You know that’s going to help us in the end because it’s difficult to get out of there and get back on track.

Ham and Prince’s undefeated NBA Cup record will stand at least until next season. Rivers may need to keep his secret weapons to challenge for this season’s title again in 2025.
