Documentary about the tense 1923 break between Mark Gastineau and Brett Favre

Former New York Jets star Mark Gastineau, who has held a grudge against Brett Favre for two decades, confronted the Hall of Fame quarterback at a memorial show last year and accused him of intentionally taking a sack that gave Gastineau the NFL record in a single season.

A tense and uncomfortable scene ensued, which was captured on video. It appears in the ESPN 30 for 30 documentary “The New York Sack Exchange,” premiering Friday at 8 p.m. ET (ESPN/ESPN+).

An angry Gastineau attended the memorabilia exhibit being held in Chicago along with two other members of the Jets’ “Sack Exchange,” a four-man defensive line that dominated the early 1980s. He approached an unsuspecting Favre at a table where the Green Bay Packers legend was signing autographs.

They shook hands. Favre mentioned how they had met before.

“Yeah, right – when you fell in love with him,” Gastineau said, referring to former New York Giants star Michael Strahan – the record breaker. “I will get my bag back. I’ll get my sack back, dude.”

Favre looked confused.

“You’d probably hurt me,” he said.

“Well, I don’t care,” Gastineau said, pointing at Favre. “You hurt me. You hurt me! Do you hear me?”

“Yes, I understand you,” Favre said.

“You really hurt me,” Gastineau shot back. “You really hurt me, Brett.”

At this point, Favre was led away by one of his handlers, leaving a seething Gastineau alone. He was recorded by a camera crew who were following him.

Gastineau was referring to the final game of the 2001 season, when Strahan broke Gastineau’s single-season record with a controversial overthrow of Favre. Gastineau held the mark with 22 sacks from 1984 to 2001. Many believe that Favre intentionally went down so that Strahan could break the record with 22.5.

Gastineau was present that day and warmly congratulated Strahan. After 18 years of suppressing his anger, Gastineau made his true feelings public in a 2020 interview with ESPN.

He doubles down on the documentary.

“Everyone will tell you Brett Favre took a leap,” Gastineau said in the documentary.

“30 for 30” chronicles the rise and fall of the “Sack Exchange” and the complex relationship between the polarizing Gastineau and his teammates Joe Klecko, Marty Lyons and the late Abdul Salaam.

When reached by phone, Gastineau explained why he confronted Favre.

“I wanted to let him know it was a trash bag,” he said.

“I’ve wanted to do this for a long time – many, many years,” Gastineau added. “I only have one man left to go to” – referring to Strahan, who Gastineau believes teamed up with Favre to break the record.

Gastineau had no idea Favre would be at the show until he and his wife Jo Ann arrived in Chicago and saw Favre’s name on a list of attendees. Lyons, who was in Chicago and witnessed the confrontation, said he tried to convince his former teammate to stay away from Favre.

“I said, ‘Mark, let it go, just let it go. This happened years ago,’” Lyons said in a telephone interview. “But he had this little crazy look in his eyes.”

Later that day, Jo Ann Gastineau returned to Favre’s table to smooth things over. She said she apologized and said her husband “didn’t mean anything by it.”

The record also caused Strahan heartache.

“The sack record is great, absolutely phenomenal, but I almost feel like it’s been diminished in some ways because everyone says, ‘Oh, Brett Favre gave you a sack,'” Strahan said in “A Football Life.” “, a 2013 documentary broadcast by NFL Network. “I have had to take so much criticism because of that. … It’s not worth it because everyone looks like a sack they question is the defining moment of my career.”

The Hall of Famer is no longer the sole holder of the single-season record, as Pittsburgh Steelers star TJ Watt matched Strahan’s record with 22.5 sacks in 2021.
