The Los Angeles Dodgers are continuing their spending spree from last year, even after winning the World Series.

According to multiple reports, the Dodgers dug deeper and signed Blake Snell to a five-year contract worth $182 million.

Of course, some other reports also say that the deal will be postponed.

The Dodgers signed contracts worth over $1 billion last year and have now completed their first nine-figure deal this offseason, less than a month after winning the Fall Classic.

Snell joined the San Francisco Giants last offseason on a two-year contract that included the right to opt out after his Cy Young Award-winning 2023 season. But teams were afraid to commit to him and left him as a free agent until March.

His season got off to a rough start, as he had a 9.51 ERA in his first six starts – he also caught an IL stint in that frame. But in his last 14 appearances, he pitched a minuscule 1.23 ERA and struck out 114 batters in 80.1 innings. Understandably, the Dodgers like what they see from the left-hander.

Los Angeles expects to bring Shohei Ohtani back into the rotation, and the fate of Clayton Kershaw and Walker Buehler remains to be seen – the former is more likely to stay in LA and remain a career Dodger if he doesn’t retire.

But they’ll also have Tyler Glasnow back, and they’re the favorites to sign Japanese phenom Roki Sasaki, just like they did with Yoshinobu Yamamoto last year.

Snell has become one of the most underrated prospects in baseball, likely because of his lack of depth. He threw a no-hitter in 2024, but that was the first time in his career that he got an out in the eighth inning.

His 11.2 K/9 is the best in MLB history and his career ERA is 3.19 – although he only has one All-Star nomination, he is on at least borderline Hall of Fame trajectory reserved.

Snell turns 32 next week, so the Dodgers may be taking some risks — but it’s pretty obvious that they can spend more on every possible mistake they make.

The first big shot goes to the Dodgers… and they probably aren’t done yet.
