Dodgers still looking for pitching relief after re-signing Blake Treinen: sources

DALLAS – The Los Angeles Dodgers’ re-signing of October star Blake Treinen to a two-year, $22 million contract does not appear to have completed the organization’s plans to bolster the bullpen.

According to league sources, the reigning World Series champions are looking for at least one more replacement player The athleteand look at the top of this market. That includes interest in free-agent left-hander Tanner Scott, league sources said, and a possible trade for Milwaukee Brewers closer Devin Williams.

Scott, who was ranked as the top free agent reliever available The athlete‘s free agent big board is coming off a dominant two-year stretch in which he posted a 2.04 ERA and struck out 188 batters in 150 innings. The Dodgers expressed interest in trading for Scott at last year’s trade deadline before the Miami Marlins traded him to the San Diego Padres for four players in what was perceived as a win. During the National League Division Series, the Padres used the hard-throwing left-hander to neutralize MVP Shohei Ohtani. Scott’s top-notch material has wowed the Dodgers’ staff.

The Dodgers could also try to make a deal for Williams, who has a 1.83 ERA in 235 2/3 career innings with Milwaukee and is in his final season before free agency. The Brewers declined Williams’ $10.5 million club option earlier this winter. And while the right-hander is still in the arbitration process for next season, Milwaukee could use Williams to address other areas of need like starting pitching or its infield. Williams has drawn significant interest from other contenders, including the Dodgers.

Los Angeles used its bullpen aggressively out of necessity throughout October, salvaging its season with a bullpen game against the Padres in Game 4 of the NLDS and using several other bullpen games to make a postseason run with just three healthy ones Starters in Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Jack Flaherty and Walker Bühler.

Treinen’s return provides some stability, even though they’ve already lost the experienced Daniel Hudson to retirement and Joe Kelly remains a free agent on the open market.

Signing Treinen isn’t the only big relief move this week at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas. The Philadelphia Phillies have signed closer Jordan Romano to a one-year deal.
