Dolphins win to keep playoff hopes alive; Tua Tagovailoa (hip) is uncertain for Week 18

Sunday marked the team’s fifth game this season using a backup quarterback, with previous attempts nearly amounting to complete disaster.

When Tagovailoa missed four games due to a concussion earlier this season, the Dolphins were 1-3 and did not score more than 15 points in any contest. Tyler Huntley started in three of those contests and picked up the only win, but also only threw for 125.6 yards per game, one touchdown and one interception.

After being eliminated from playoff contention with a loss on Sunday, Huntley faced a team he spent time with earlier in the year. He was efficient, throwing for 225 yards and scoring on 22 of 26 passes, and he led the team with 52 rushing yards. He wasn’t flashy, but he didn’t need to be as Miami’s defense suffocated the Browns on the other side.

The win means the Dolphins can now make the playoffs with a win against Gang Green and a Broncos loss to the Chiefs, who are expected to take a break at 15-1.

Even with Huntley’s improved play, Miami would certainly have a better chance of fulfilling their end of the bargain if Tagovailoa was able to perform under center. The Dolphins’ QB1 entered Week 17 leading the league in completion percentage (72.9%) with 2,867 passing yards, 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

For now, McDaniel and Co. will have to settle for reaching the final game of the regular season with something to fight for.

As the week progresses, they should have a better idea of who will be taking snaps in the important matchup.
