Dominick Reyes beats emotional Anthony Smith via TKO

Dominick Reyes got his second stoppage of the year by stopping an emotional Anthony Smith at UFC 310.

The light heavyweight contest served as the main preliminary round of the event at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Reyes (14-4 MMA, 8-4 UFC) capped a fantastic performance with a TKO stoppage at 4:46 of the second round.

The emotions were clearly felt by Smith (38-21 MMA, 13-11 UFC) shortly before the fight began. As Reyes walked out, Smith cried while waiting in the cage, thinking about the death of his close friend and trainer Scott Morton.

Smith worked through the moment and the fight began. Reyes and Smith exchanged solid punches and established clinch positions in an active opening start. After accidental eye contact with Reyes, the fight continued with Reyes gaining momentum.

Hard punches hit Reyes and seemed to stun Smith in an instant. Smith responded with a few punches, but then he simply dropped his hands and let Reyes land a series of flush shots down the middle.

Smith started Round 2 with forward pressure, looking for a single-leg takedown. He remained stuck in the position and threw a series of hard short punches while still holding Reyes’ leg. Finally, Smith dropped to the canvas and Reyes fired the punches from above.

Reyes continued to fire punches at the bowled-over Smith as referee Marc Goddard warned Smith to move. Further punches caused Smith to fail to improve and Goddard decided to stop the fight.

As Reyes celebrated, Smith began removing his gloves.

Smith was given the opportunity to speak at the microphone and said he wasn’t sure how often he would be able to compete without his coach by his side. “Lionheart” admitted that he couldn’t control his emotions while walking, and that carried over into the fight.

Smith made no commitment to retire but said it would “probably” be his last fight.
