Dominoes are falling for the Yankees to acquire Star Slugger in a $119 million deal

The New York Yankees may be disappointed to see outfielder Kyle Tucker move to the Chicago Cubs. However, it also opens up the opportunity for the team to sign one of the best players available in free agency.

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Cubs are sending third baseman Isaac Paredes to the Houston Astros as part of the Tucker trade. This move likely indicates that Houston is waving the white flag on the possibility of re-signing free agent Alex Bregman.

Spotrac’s calculated market value for Bregman suggests a four-year deal worth nearly $120 million. However, agent Scott Boras’ representation suggests that any deal the nine-year Major League Baseball veteran signs will be higher.

As stars disappear from the market, it becomes increasingly urgent to sign top talent that is still available. According to FanGraphs, the Yankees currently have Oswaldo Cabrera selected as their Opening Day third baseman.

After losing Juan Soto to the New York Mets, the Yankees need to make a splash. Even the proposed trade talks between the Cubs and Yankees for outfielder Cody Bellinger likely won’t satisfy Bronx supporters, as New York needs improvements at first base (current starter Ben Rice) and third base.

There have been rumors about the Yankees signing Mets free agent first baseman Pete Alonso, but what about third baseman?

Nightengale muses that moving Tucker to Chicago would “open the door” for the Yankees to sign Bregman. New York is certainly one of the few MLB teams that could give Boras a blank check to sign the seemingly former Astros third baseman without batting an eyelid.
