Donald Trump confirmed on Monday that his eldest son Don Jr. plans to visit Greenland, two weeks after US President-elect Washington suggested annexing the autonomous Danish territory.

“My son Don Jr. and various representatives will be traveling there to visit some of the greatest areas and sights,” Trump said in a post on his Truth Social website, without giving a specific time frame for the trip.

“Greenland is an incredible place and people will benefit enormously from it if and when it becomes part of our nation. We will protect and cherish it from a very malevolent outside world. MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!”

Previously, the Danish Foreign Ministry said it had “noted Donald Trump Jr.’s planned visit to Greenland,” adding: “As this is not an official American visit, the Danish Foreign Ministry has no further comment.”

Shortly before Christmas, Trump said that “the United States of America believes ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity in the interest of national security and freedom around the world.”

The island’s government responded that it was not for sale, repeating its response to similar statements from then-President Trump in 2019.

No details of Don Jr.’s visit were released and it appeared to be a private trip, a Greenlandic diplomat, Mininnguaq Kleist, told Danish public television DR.

Kleist said Trump Jr., who is close to his father, is not expected to meet with Greenlandic officials.

Greenland Prime Minister Mute Egede was scheduled to meet King Frederik X in Copenhagen on Wednesday, but the meeting was postponed due to scheduling reasons, according to local media.
