The 45th president, who retook the White House last month, sought pardons during his campaign for the thousands of defendants either still on trial or already convicted of breaking into the Capitol as Congress voted to certify Biden’s 2020 election victory Trump voted.

Trump’s campaign previously released a statement denigrating the Justice Department while promising to fix the federal agency. There was no mention of President Biden or his son.

“The failed witch hunts against President Trump have proven that the Democratic-controlled Justice Department and other radical prosecutors are guilty of weaponizing the justice system,” Trump spokesman Steven Cheung said in a statement.

“This justice system must be repaired and due process restored for all Americans, and that is exactly what President Trump will do when he returns to the White House with an overwhelming mandate from the American people.”

Hunter, 54, is now exonerated after being scheduled to be sentenced later this month on various federal gun and tax evasion cases.

The first son pleaded guilty in September to nine counts of defrauding the government of $1.4 million in taxes and was convicted in June of three federal weapons offenses for possessing weapons while addicted to crack cocaine.

Biden, 82, argued Sunday that his son had been “selectively and unfairly prosecuted” – and issued a sweeping pardon covering all crimes committed between Jan. 1, 2014 and Dec. 1, 2024.

He had previously claimed he would not take any action to help his son, telling reporters at a press conference during the G7 summit in June: “I said I would abide by the jury’s decision. I will do this and I will not forgive him.”

In his statement Sunday night, the lame-duck president did a U-turn, saying, “Attempts were made to break Hunter – who has been sober for five and a half years, even in the face of relentless attacks and selective prosecution.” In trying to break Hunter, they tried , to break me – and there is no reason to think it will stop there. Enough is enough.”
