President-elect Donald Trump is preparing his plans for his inauguration on January 20th.

During a press conference on Tuesday, January 7, the 78-year-old shared his plan to rename the Gulf of Mexico.

“We are going to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America,” Trump told reporters. “It has a beautiful sound. That covers a large area. The Gulf of America, what a beautiful name. And it is appropriate. It’s appropriate.”

Trump, known for his strict immigration policies, added: “And Mexico must stop letting millions of people flow into our country.”

He also called Mexico a “very dangerous place” and claimed it is “essentially controlled by cartels.”

Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene quickly confirmed on X that she is preparing legislation to make Trump’s wish a reality.

“I will introduce legislation as soon as possible to officially change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to its rightful name, the Gulf of America!” Greene wrote alongside a video of Trump’s comments.

The Gulf of Mexico refers to the part of the Atlantic Ocean bordered by the US states of Florida, Louisiana, Alabama and Texas as well as Mexico and Cuba.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, Gulf of Mexico offshore oil production accounts for 14% of total U.S. crude oil production in 2024, and federal offshore natural gas production in the Gulf accounts for 5% of total U.S. dry production.

In the run-up to his inauguration, Trump spoke out several times and threatened to introduce tariffs against both Mexico and neighboring Canada.

Trump’s threat of a 25 percent increase in tariffs on Canadian goods is considered one of the reasons Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Monday, January 6, his plans to resign as soon as a replacement can be found.

In response to Trudeau’s message, Trump sarcastically wrote on Truth Social, “Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st nation,” referring to his statement that Canada should not be its own country.

“If Canada merged with the US, there would be no tariffs, taxes would drop significantly and it would be COMPLETELY SAFE from the threat of the Russian and Chinese ships that constantly surround it,” he continued. “Together this would be a great nation!!!”
