“Don’t call them Cinderella, call them National Champions” – Vermont Soccer pulled off a miracle and won the national title with a fantastic walk-off goal

A quick shout out to Dalen Cuff, who made this decision. Perfect line and something Jim Nantz would deliver. But this is about Vermont, who somehow won the national soccer championship with that walk-off goal last night. I know they were good and ranked in the top 20, but they were an unseeded team from America East that beat the 7 seeds, 2 seeds, 3 seeds and 13 seeds en route to the title. It’s not like the NCAA Tournament, the top 16 teams get a spot and not to mention Vermont had an extra game due to byes.

This is also about football in Vermont. When you think of college football and national titles, UNC, Virginia, Indiana, Wake, UCLA, Clemson and Maryland come to mind. Most teams have warmer climates or historical dominance in football. Now add Vermont to the list. It is the first national team title for the school. It is the first national title for the school that is not involved in skiing. Somewhere, TJ Sorrentine and Taylor Coppenrath are smiling. Sorrentine, especially since this pass came from *ahem* the parking lot.

The pass was great and then the ability to make a move and finish under pressure is harder than people give it credit for. There’s nothing you can do about it, your brain starts to realize the dream: “Do this and I’ll win a national title.” That’s what every kid dreams of, no matter what sport it is. Dude buried it and immediately went into celebration mode. Impressive. So cheers to Vermont, a national title and one heck of a performance.
