Drake Maye reiterates his stance after Patriots denied opportunity for Hail Mary

Drake Maye knows he can make the ball fly when he needs to. The New England Patriots probably should have trusted him with that in Week 13.

The Patriots allowed a late touchdown and a two-point conversion to the Indianapolis Colts. New England trailed 25-24 and had one last play from midfield. The Patriots didn’t let Maye make a Hail Mary attempt, instead opting to have kicker Joey Slye attempt a 68-yard field goal. The attempt, which would have set an NFL record, failed due to defeat.

When asked about the decision after the game, Maye didn’t blame anyone, but reiterated Monday that he can definitely give the Patriots a shot.

“I think whenever you’re on the 50, in the middle of the field, if you can’t make that throw, I’m not sure you should be in the NFL,” Maye shared on the “WEEI Afternoon Show” on Monday. “Had a chance for a Hail Mary, but like I said, Joey, the special teams coordinator and coach Mayo, was ready for whatever the team decided. Yes, if you can’t shout “Ave Maria” from 50 meters away, I think you may be playing the wrong sport.”

Maye shows off his legitimate arm strength on a weekly basis for the Patriots. While there’s a lot more to a Hail Mary, New England has the quarterback who can give them a chance.
