Drone sightings in Maryland and New Jersey spark calls for more oversight – NBC4 Washington

Concerns about drones are growing across the country after several sightings in New Jersey in recent weeks. This has even led to lawmakers in New Jersey calling for a limited ban on drone flights until the public gets answers about the sightings.

Now there have also been sightings in Bowie, Maryland.

“We’re seeing at least three to five different drones in the sky,” said Autumn Stasulli, who shot videos of drones outside her home in Bowie. “I was shocked. My mouth dropped.”

The discovery came shortly after Stasulli said she and her sister discussed two other drone sightings in New Jersey.

She said she has lived in Bowie all her life and has never seen a sight like this.

“It was very disturbing afterward because I thought, ‘Oh my God.’ “It’s happening here in Bowie, Maryland,” Stasulli said. “Why Bowie? Bowie is such a quiet, quiet town.”

After several sightings were reported across New Jersey, members of the House of Representatives and part of the Homeland Security Subcommittee questioned FBI leaders about the drone sightings on Tuesday.

New Jersey lawmakers have called for a limited ban on drones within the state until the public receives an explanation.

Some lawmakers also say better oversight is needed.

“I think it will be important for the federal government and state and local governments to take a look at what kind of protections we need to put in place to protect ordinary citizens,” said Maryland Congressman Glenn Ivey.

As for Stasulli, like everyone else, she wants to know what’s flying up there.

“They don’t know who controls them, who sends them here,” she said. “Are you from another country?”

News4 has reached out to the FBI for comment and is awaiting a response.
