Drones spotted over New York City force US senators to demand federal briefing

NEW YORK – Lawmakers from New York and New Jersey are calling for a federal briefing to be concluded the unmanned drones that have been alerting residents in recent weeks.

This is because additional sightings have been reported in parts of Queens and the Bronx.

The NYPD said it was investigating the drone activity along with the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force.

The concern has now spread to the country’s capital. Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut has called for the unmanned drones to be shot down, although it is still unclear who is operating them.

“We should urgently conduct an intelligence analysis and get them out of the sky, especially if they are flying over airports or military bases,” Blumenthal said.

On Thursday, New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and New Jersey Sens. Cory Booker and Andy Kim sent a letter to the Department of Homeland Security, the FBI and the Federal Aviation Administration requesting a briefing the drone activities asked He calls the sightings alarming and poses a potential safety risk.

“We should know what’s going on in our skies,” Booker said.

The White House also got involved. National security communications adviser John Kirby said many of the more than 3,000 reported sightings may have been aircraft that were mistaken for drones.

On Thursday, several drones were also seen over the southwestern part of the Bronx, an area that includes Yankee Stadium. Officers responded and saw the drones, but said they disappeared shortly afterwards.

Springfield Gardens, Queens resident Rashawn McIntosh shared videos taken shortly after midnight on Thursday. The CBS News Confirmed team verified its authenticity.

“It had a lot of flashing lights. It was hovering in a spot where I would say it was not a JFK plane,” McIntosh said. “My concern is not knowing where they come from.

“All of these drones are the same type of drone,” he added.
