Dua Lipa on performing at the Royal Albert Hall with Elton John and reuniting with her childhood music teacher

Pop superstar Dua Lipa is having a very big year.

Her third album, “Radical Optimism”, reached number 1 in eleven countries, she embarked on a world tour and headlined the Glastonbury Festival. Now we get “An Evening with Dua Lipa,” a special concert reimagining all of her hits, performed with a 53-piece orchestra at the legendary Royal Albert Hall in London. The performance will air Sunday night on CBS and Paramount+.

“It was always at the top of my list of places I always wanted to perform. And I just love the theatrical element of the venue and how grand it is, but also very intimate,” she told “CBS Mornings” on Thursday.

She shared that performing in smaller, more intimate settings allowed her to develop a more personal connection with the audience and engage with her music on a deeper level, something she had missed when focusing on larger shows.

Performing with the orchestra was a transformative experience for her.

“It totally helps you reinterpret everything. You hear the lyrics differently, you feel the music differently. And especially for me, it was incredibly emotional to hear my songs reinterpreted in that way and then to be in the middle of 53 incredible musicians, just…” It’s like it’s captivating, like it’s opening you up move in a completely different way. And I feel like it was such a joyful moment in the room.

The performance includes a surprise duet with Elton Johna moment Lipa described as a “bucket list experience.”

“I’ve listened to Elton’s music my whole life and having someone like Elton as a friend and someone who has supported me from the beginning of my career, who advocates for me, is by my side and then shows up for me in this function,” she said.

The special also includes an emotional reunion with Ray, the music teacher from Lipa’s childhood who she credits with changing her life. Dua Lipa said she hasn’t seen him in ten years.

“You know, teachers are so incredibly important, and a good teacher can really change the course of a child’s life. And Ray changed my life for me. He made me believe I could do it. That’s what he told me. “I had something special that was worth looking at… to dig a little deeper,” she said.

Reflecting on the concert, Dua Lipa added:

“When it’s closer to the music, I really feel like I’m where I’m supposed to be. You know, the live instruments are really what moves me. And I don’t know, I found the performance itself exciting, but on the other hand, also really inspiring for, I don’t know, new things.”

“An Evening with Dua Lipa” airs this Sunday at 8:30 pm EST on CBS and streams on Paramount+.
