“Dunleavy and Kerr want to take “weeks” to evaluate the Warriors’ roster

SAN FRANCISCO – Both general manager Mike Dunleavy and head coach Steve Kerr appear to be in lockstep when it comes to seeing what this current Warriors group can do in January before turning their attention to potential big wins.

During the Warriors’ final game against the Philadelphia 76ers, TNT reporter Jared Greenberg reported on-air that Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy wants to spend the next few weeks evaluating the team before making any “reactionary decisions.” .

That same night, Jimmy Butler requested a trade from Miami. The Heat suspended him for seven games for misconduct and are open to trade offers.

So the butler market could emerge quickly. During this time, Dunleavy wants to take stock of his team rather than make trade suggestions.

When asked about the report that sparked Dunleavy’s wait-and-see attitude, head coach Steve Kerr said he spoke to the general manager about the issue.

“I think that makes perfect sense,” Kerr said.

After defeating Philadelphia, the Warriors improved to 17-16. They started the season 12-3, showing strong shooting and tenacious defense before De’Anthony Melton suffered a torn ACL. With the Warriors’ score at 3:12, they subbed Melton for Dennis Schroder.

This is likely to be the only transaction the team makes for now.

“We’ve had ups and downs this year, but we like the group,” Kerr said. “We like the people we have. We really want to see how we play next month. And then we just keep our options open.”

The Warriors’ power brokers have long expressed a desire to maximize Steph Curry’s championship window. The clearest way to accomplish this is to get him immediate help in the form of a star sidekick before the February 6th trade deadline.

Although Jonathan Kuminga has become a nightly force over the last two weeks, he is only 22 years old and won’t be at his best for a few years.

“Obviously we’re a game over .500, so we’re not in a position to say, ‘Hey, we’re good enough, let’s stand firm,'” Kerr said. “We have to look at all options. The players know that. They understand how this league works. For me it means: Let’s see what we can do in the next few weeks. Hopefully we get used to this rotation and start shooting the ball better. I think with Dennis (Schroder) in the team we now have the chance to be a really great defensive team again, like we were at the beginning of the year.
