Eagles-Ravens Snap Counts: Jalen Carter rarely leaves the field

Eagles-Ravens Snap Counts: Jalen Carter rarely leaves the field

The official snap counts from the Philadelphia Eagles’ Week 13 road win over the Baltimore Ravens are here! Let’s take a look and do an analysis.

ATTACK

  • Saquon Barkley posted his second-highest snap count percentage this season. Only his play in Week 2 was better.
  • Dallas Goedert suffered a knee injury in the fourth quarter and was questionable to return. His status will need to be monitored this week.
  • Jahan Dotson was clearly the WR2 with both DeVonta Smith and Johnny Wilson out.
  • Parris Campbell was able to play a good portion of the playing time after being reinstated to the squad from the practice squad. He was targeted on Jalen Hurts’ first throw, which was deflected at the line of scrimmage. Nick Sirianni praised both Campbell and Dotson for their good downfield blocking on Barkley’s touchdown run.
  • Grant Calcaterra saw some action as a replacement for Ben VanSumeren at fullback for the Eagles. Calcaterra has just two targets for zero catches since Goedert returned to the starting lineup.
  • CJ Uzomah’s snap count percentage increased for the third week in a row. Uzomah no longer has a temporary elevation on the practice squad, so it will be interesting to see how the Eagles handle TE3 in the future.
  • Tyler Steen was used as the sixth offensive lineman in certain packages.
  • Britain Covey’s only goal came on the Eagles’ first drive. Covey suffered a neck injury in that game and was doubtful to return.
  • Kenny Gainwell didn’t record a touchdown in a game for the first time all season.
  • Cooper DeJean replaced Reed Blankenship, who lined up deep behind the offense in victory formation. The offensive security, if you will.
  • Will Shipley saw a targeted touch on the Eagles’ third play from scrimmage. Then he didn’t play on offense for the rest of the game. The Eagles also did this with Shipley in Week 4. What’s wrong with that?

DEFENSE

  • Zack Baun filled the box score again with a total of 13 tackles, which is the highest on the team.
  • Jalen Carter played a season-high 71 snaps, five more than his previous high. He showed no signs of being gassed; he was dominant. And he even struggled to make downfield tackles in garbage time on the Ravens’ final drive. Vic Fangio obviously loves having him on the field as often as possible.
  • Quinyon Mitchell briefly missed some action after Baun’s helmet made contact with the rookie’s knee. Kelee Ringo stepped in for two snaps.
  • Nolan Smith led all Eagles edge rushers in seasons. The Eagles appear to be leaning on him more after Brandon Graham’s injury.
  • Reed Blankenship left the game early due to a concussion.
  • 51 snaps were a season high for Josh Sweat. The Eagles made it a point not to overwhelm him beyond a certain point within a game.
  • Milton Williams played a season-high 41 snaps as DT2. He benefited from Carter getting extra attention.
  • Jalyx Hunt was a bigger part of the edge rush rotation with Graham and Bryce Huff on injured reserve. The rookie has gone from a redshirt prospect to the No. 3 edge rusher.
  • Jordan Davis played his third-lowest snap count percentage. He was clearly effective in the limited playing time.
  • Tristin McCollum came in at safety to replace Blankenship.
  • Avonte Maddox was only on the field for two defensive snaps. The Ravens followed right behind him. The Eagles can’t keep playing Maddox.
  • Oren Burks briefly came into the game after Nakobe Dean briefly left the game with an injury. What’s notable is that it was him and not Jeremiah Trotter Jr.

SPECIAL TEAMS

  • Rick Lovato was called for a holding penalty, which caused the Eagles to retry a punt.
  • Ochaun Mathis played exclusively on special teams in his Eagles debut. He was credited with a tackle.
  • Eli Ricks was active for the first time since Week 9. He has played zero defensive snaps and 26 special teams snaps in four games this season. If he can’t play in front of Maddox and doesn’t really help on special teams, why is he even on the roster?

DO NOT PLAY

INACTIVE: DeVonta Smith, Johnny Wilson, Darius Slay, Nick Gates, Darian Kinnard, Trevon Keegan, Tanner McKee

ACTIVE: Kenny Pickett, Ainias Smith, Charles Harris

  • DeVonta reportedly pushed to play in this game. He could be used in Week 14, although the Eagles shouldn’t need him to beat the Carolina Panthers.
  • Wilson is dealing with a hamstring injury. It is unclear whether he will be able to play in Week 14.
  • Slay could be cleared to return in time for the Eagles’ Week 14 game.
  • Keegan is five games away from being a healthy backup all season. The same goes for McKee, who is still masquerading as the third emergency quarterback for the game.
  • It’s unusual to have three active players who don’t log a snap. Pickett is no surprise as the backup QB. Ainias not playing after the Eagles tried to give him some players seems to be a bad sign for his stock. He was the WR5 behind Brown, Dotson, Campbell and Covey. Harris appeared to be active just in case another edge rusher injury occurred. Since Harris was only added to the roster last week, he is still getting used to a new defensive system. One would think he would be inserted into the Eagles’ pass rush rotation as early as Week 14. Revenge game against his previous team?!
