Easing clouds and mild conditions begin the work week

QUINCY (WGEM) – After record-breaking rainfall on Saturday, conditions in the Tri-States continued to be dismal on Sunday. Low pressure prevailed early Monday morning, making for a partly to mostly cloudy start to the day. Additionally, with generally light winds from the south and southwest, patchy morning fog has begun to develop in the northern Plains near Fort Madison, Keokuk and Macomb. Although the fog is unlikely to become dense, it is advisable to drive carefully if you encounter patchy fog before 9am on Monday.

As of 5 a.m. Monday morning, a cold front has formed west of the Tri-States and will move east through the region as the morning progresses. This eliminates the chance of fog and clouds begin to clear as the day progresses. However, it won’t do much to drastically cool conditions. Temperatures will remain steady in the mid 40s to low 50s through early afternoon as skies become sunnier. What you will notice is the wind increasing. During the afternoon winds will be 10 to 15 mph, with gusts up to 25 mph at times. Later in the evening, as the sun sets, skies are still generally clear as westerly winds die down. This can cause temperatures to drop back to values close to freezing and just below freezing.

Tuesday will start out significantly cooler than Monday, but it won’t be cold by any means. Temperatures will start near freezing, which is slightly warmer than normal for this time of year. Additionally, winds will begin to shift southward, which will increase above-average temperatures Tuesday afternoon. Cloud formation will also increase as a disturbance develops in the eastern Rockies and extends into the Great Plains. While Tuesday’s sunshine will increasingly be obscured by clouds, high temperatures in the mid to upper 40s will be reasonably comfortable for a walk outside with your dog.

There is a slight chance for a few showers late Tuesday evening as low pressure remains south of the Tri-States. By the time you wake up on Wednesday, our disturbance will already be moving out of the area, bringing with it the chance of rain. As Wednesday progresses, skies will become increasingly sunny, but winds will be north-northwest at about 20 mph. This will limit daily highs on Wednesday to seasonal averages in the upper 30s.
