Egyptian giants Al Ahly are just days away from kicking off their 2024 FIFA Intercontinental Cup season. The team will face the winner of the clash between Brazil’s Botafogo and Mexico’s Pachuca on Wednesday.

The Challenger Cup showdown takes place in Doha on Saturday, with the African giants taking on the winner of Wednesday’s game in the Qatari capital.

The Cairo-based side have earned their place by winning the FIFA Africa-Asia-Pacific Cup with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Asian champions Al Ain and are exuding great confidence.

Ahly now dreams of facing European champions Real Madrid in the Intercontinental Cup final.

A winning mentality drives Al Ahly

Midfielder Marwan Attia reflected on the club’s attitude to performing on the biggest stage.

“Al Ahly are used to competing in big tournaments – that’s who we are, that’s in our nature,” he said after their recent triumph.

His confidence reflects the team’s record-breaking history, including 12 CAF Champions League titles and a number of domestic and continental trophies.

Veteran defender Omar Kamal highlighted the team’s resilience under pressure.

“Al Ahly’s character only comes out when we are under pressure. We showed that in the African Super Cup, the Egyptian Super Cup and again against Al Ain,” he said.

Kamal, a key player for Ahly, stressed the importance of concentration and respect for his opponents.

Prepared for big challenges

Mahmoud Kahraba, one of Al Ahly’s stars, underlined the club’s hunger for titles. “We always focus on winning big and important games because it gives us a new title,” he said.

Kahraba praised fans for their unwavering support, which has become the hallmark of the team’s success.

Reflecting on the size of the upcoming games, Attia added: “Meeting Real Madrid is certainly a motivating factor for us as they are the biggest club in the world. If God willing, we can play against them in the final.”

Build on experience

With a rich history in global competitions, including four appearances in the last five FIFA Club World Cups, Al Ahly’s experience is a key advantage.

“The experiences from previous editions have given us confidence,” said Kamal.

“We don’t take any game for granted because they are all big teams.”

As the countdown to Saturday’s game begins, Al Ahly’s players are focused on continuing to build their legacy on the world stage.
